So much for experienced hikers!

But, I'm glad she and the pooch survived.

She was just found alive near where their dog was found - is OK but understandably exhausted as it's very rugged terrain. No cell phone reception etc. Hopefully more info will follow

No giant bird, no falling down a deep canyon, no abduction, just plain lost from wandering too far from where her husband was coming back to.
WOW. I would suspect some kind of psychiatric fugue state caused this. Really. Just wandered off from the campground, and couldn't even get back to a road or another campsite?

Good news.

When you realize you're lost, sit down and wait for help. They teach that in the cub scouts.

One thing is certain: Any statement that a missing person is an “experienced hiker” should be viewed with a great deal of skepticism.

What is the rationale for that instruction? Just curious.

I would think it would be smarter to use the sun as a direction to the closest point of civilization and walk in that direction.

Does anyone know how much credence the search and rescue folks put in the info provided by distraught loved ones? Or do they just have a standard search grid regardless of experienced-hiker and crippled-dog?

It depends on your situation. If you're hiking all by yourself and no one knows where you've gone, it would make sense to just try to get to the nearest civilization - if you can hear highway noise, or a dog barking in the distance. Because no one will be looking for you.

If you're with someone who will notice in 10 minutes that you're gone and start a completely active search in 20, sit down. That way, you'll hear the shouts when they're looking for you.

I'm just still just baffled. One of my first posts specifically said well she's not 3, so she didn't just wander off and get lost and keep going.

But yet, that's exactly what she did.
