Most of these smash & grab groups seem to be mostly consisting of black kids 14-25. I suspect most of them recruit themselves from extended friend groups centered around neighborhoods and schools and many are likely tied into the local gangs. Social media isn't how they meet, it's how they coordinate which places to hit when. That sometimes might be on sites like Facebook but more likely is done via group chats on various services.

If there were 'larger players' involved who centrally task various groups of these kids with these jobs and collect profits from it, you could have grounds for a RICO investigation in which case the FBI would get involved and would use informants and wiretaps to get them. But they won't go to such lengths to go after a bunch of HS kids stealing crap. The only defense against those would be arresting more of them after catching them in the act and putting them behind bars for an extended timeframe. 90% of those kids wouldn't do this stuff if their 'reward' for taking an Apple Watch was a few years in the joint.

Yes, but such flash mobs weren't robbing stores. This appears to be something new.

True. Flash Mobs used to go into public places and start singing to entertain the startled crowds. Here's one of my favorites...

I doubt they organize these crimes on "social media". More likely they recruit people in the hood and do it the old fashioned organized crime way. They know "crews" and set it up with "crew leaders". I don't think they would be so stupid as to leave evidence on social media.

organized crime hasn't changed. It's just the medium to communicate has changed.

If I wanted to arrange a flash mob, I could do it on my phone with a group text.

*cough* isn't that what is being done to Trump? I mean he got kicked off Twitter and FB. Not favoring him but really I can understand why it upsets people. Take his freedom of speech, speech within reason, away and it can and most likely will be done to anyone.
