Stores need a way to stop a mob theft. Locking the front door might be a way but everyone is trapped including any shoppers that didn't get out fast enough. And it's a fire hazard to have people locked in a store.

I'm thinking something like this. During a mob theft the smash proof front door closes but also opens a small escape hole at the bottom that is only 12" high and 16" wide. Now, everyone has to crawl through that small opening on the floor to get out, one at a time. No mob will want to do that.

Something like that.
You seem to be talking about turning a smash-and-grab into a hostage situation.

Huh? You want customers to escape through a small hatch on the floor one at a time? Even the old ones?
What do you suppose the crazed mob will be doing, knowing they are now trapped like rats because, according to you, they won't want to crawl through the hatch?

Am I missing something?

Look. Until these flash mobs realize that their actions can and will get them seriously maimed or dead, they'll never stop. Start training employees how to respond with tire irons and baseball bats. And if a criminal expires on the showroom floor, give the employee a metal, not a prison sentence.

You seem to be presuming nobody in the mob is armed and that the employees will be better brawlers than a gang of experienced street criminals.

A lot of people had a good time looting during the summer of 2020. And best of all there was little to fear about being arrested.

So why stop? Bum rush a store 40-60 strong and take what you want. Thus far it appears to be working. As long as people believe they can steal without fear of arres...t this will continue.

I'm sure Union Square in San Francisco where recent flash mob robberies took place has plenty of video cameras. Yet, I've not read about the police making any arrests.

No point in trying to fence anything from Target or Walmart.

So what? What does it matter if they are stealing goods to fence or clothes to wear. Thus far they seem to be getting away with it.

However, it looks like the SFPD did catch a few who stole from a local Louis Vuitton store:

Next smash & grab- as soon as the smashing starts, guns start firing. Problem solved.

Am I also presuming that cowards refuse to fight back for fear of getting hurt? They'd rather scare the rest of us into their shivering, quivering mindset. Just let the mobs take what they want, right? It's only material stuff.

Actually... if you look at flea markets, fb marketplace, ebay, or dozens of other resell sites, you might be amazed at how much of that everyday stuff people are selling for dirt cheap is stolen mdse.

As a retail employee, y'all are crazy if you think any of us are going after these folks, they have no qualms causing serious harm to others over a few dollars worth of mdse. I'm not risking myself for the benefit of my employer. Hire some mercenaries, lol!

Employees of chain stores in CA are not going to fight back. However, a small business owner in the south is most likely armed and not afraid to fire and everyone knows it.
