The memorable opening ceremonies, directed by filmmaker Zhang Yimou, had a visual display that was beautiful – dazzling, in fact. And the emphasis on little kids was great. Then they stuck it to the Western leaders, who don't approve of the way the Chinese government is running their prosperous country, by having Uyghur, cross-country skier Dinigeer Yilamujiang, be co-lighter of the Olympic Flame.
Nah. I don't have tv anymore but I remember the Olympics being a big deal and fun occasion for most of my life. Many things that used to be that way are no longer interesting to me and seem to divide more than unite because politics ruins everything.
Hope the games will suit the athletes and glad they can participat.e.
Watching USA coverage is extremely self centric, and as full of propaganda and glitz as China broadcasting. Would be great to have actual event content of all nations, rather than Hollywood / NFL style commentary and presentation to pump only the USA.
The key to enjoying Olympic coverage in America is to avoid the main NBC feed at all cost because that’s where the bulk of the awfulness is. The stuff on USA or CNBC or Olympic Channel is where you find the actual sports coverage of athletes around the world. You are even better off if you like a sport that less than 10K Americans actually care about, like team handball or biathlon because NBC Sports will get the most competent English language announcers they can find for that and send it directly to a cable channel without the broadcast soft focus human interest story taint. Granted that event will air at like 3:30am on the Golf Channel, but that’s what DVRs and on demand programming are for.

Yes! I can attest to that. I discovered that when the summer Olympics were on. Even watching NBC stream on their website was better than their tv broadcast coverage. The commentators were even different and didn't yammer on as much.
Discovering NBC Olympic stream was a godsend because I was so tired of just seeing beach volleyball on and wanted to see more equestrian and skateboarding events. Their gymnastics coverage was better as well. Less commentary and more showcasing of gymnasts. I don't want to hear any hard luck stories. Just give me the... Olympics. And not just beach volleyball and diving.
