I was referring specifically to brakeless fixed-gear bikes, which seems to be all the rage among the hip crowd. Probably could have made that clearer.

I see. Indeed bikes with no brakes are just a death wish on two wheels. I'm an avid biker, so I apologize for snapping, just thought you were one of the "stay off the road" psychos, lol.

I can agree on the danger, but a fixed gears drivetrain can be used as a brake.

mine has a brake and he chain is on the 44 tooth chain ring, so it's slow.

Yeah, there no more dangerous than a normal bike Try riding cruising down a hill with on one. it's almost impossible to keep your feet on the pedals after about 25-30 mph with a normal sized gear, and once that happens it's almost impossible to stop without wrecking. They don't stop like a normal bike due to the momentum of the fixed gear, and most people build them without the useless hand breaks anyways. I assumed that people outside of hipster strongholds like Seattle, New York or Portland new about all this, but apparently this hasn't caused a problem in other parts of the country yet.
Then you need to hit up the gym and build up that leg strength or stay off the hills.

No problem with fixies. I do have problems with brake-less bikes on city streets. Most fixie riders in Oakland do have brakes. But I have been nearly run over by the losers without.

Ever seen "Premium Rush?". Illustrates the practice. I loved the movie but certainly don't advise riding like that.

I love that movie, but Line Of Sight by Lucas Brunelle is a tad more realistic. It's a documentry on Alleycats.

In the poll I voted no but if there was a nationwide epidemic of crashes, injuries and damaged property due to the fixies I would imagine that there would be a law stating that all bicycles ridden on public streets must have brakes. That would end the fixies.

-Cheers.

Not all fixies are brake less.

This is probably a stupid question, but this is a long thread.
In other words, a fixie doesn't coast, as in the pedals keep going around (like some bike I had as a kid, don't remember which), correct? So going down a hill at a fast clip would be tough because most couldn't peddle that fast?
