I found this on my go-to blog for Dallas area school info today. Very interesting read comparing the racial and economic makeup of several dozen area schools now vs 20 years ago.

Dallas, Texas Area School Information: School Demographics 1993-1994 and 2011-2012 for some DFW Area Schools

Using elementary, middle, and high schools in many of our communities, this post illustrates the vastly changed makeup of the DFW area:
1. Far too many kids living in poverty. And poverty reaching almost every corner of the metroplex. Very few schools have a smaller % of students living in poverty today vs 1993: Lakewood Elementary has seen one of the most drastic drops in poverty level students (39% down to 13%). Most schools, whether in Plano or HEB or McKinney, have seen their % of students living in poverty multiply by 3,4,or 5X the 1993 rate.

2. The metroplex is FAR less white than it used to be. Even at the lily-white HPHS, non-white students now make up 10% of the population vs less than 3% in 1993.

3. The minority populations have shifted dramatically, with black families moving from the city to the suburbs and the Hispanic population exploding in DISD and other inner-city schools. Frisco HS was 2% black then and is now 12%. Arlington Lamar shifted from 12% black to 27%. Irving MacArthur was 15% Hispanic and is now 51%. Skyline HS in Dallas shifted from 35% Hispanic to 70%.

Bi-racial populations weren't tracked at all in 1993 and now represent a couple of % at almost every school.

This shows how America has been changing as a whole. When I was in the 5th grade (in the SF Bay area) my school had approx. 12 Latinos. When I exited the 12th grade my school was 40% Latino and the elementary I attended was 62% Latino. Fast-forward to today and those same urban schools are 93% and 95% Latino.

I was in Farmersville Tx yesterday and saw a lot of neighborhoods where the houses were in pretty poor condition. So were the roads. But it was pleasant and they had a nice little park I sat in for a couple hours.

I've also been in south Dallas twice this week. I drive Rt 12 the whole way then take Lancaster/Corinth back. Yeah there's some pretty sad looking places, but I've seen worse.

Funny thing TC - having moved here from Boston I occasionally find myself thinking "I kinda miss the white people". But not that much! Leave too many white people left to themselves too long and they start acting pretty weird.

Why is Lakewood so much whiter than 20 years ago? That's unusual for the Metroplex, and it's ultra-unusual for DISD. Stonewall and Woodrow are about the same.

Did the attendance zone change, are more children choosing public, or have the demographics of Lakewood simply gotten that much whiter?

So, what's your point? I think this is already apparent to all of us who live here.

I think TC may be referring to people posting how white some areas have always been, especially HP. It's still obviously extremely white......just not as much as it used to be. IMHO, a good thing.

Again, TC isn't posting it as an issue. She is just showing data and stats that are interesting to some. Calm down. Why is everyone on the defensive about this topic????
