Central Market I have seen when visiting but coming from Houston Im surprised there are no HEB's at all. Is there some sort of agreement or political agenda at hand with why they are in the surrounding areas of Dallas but not in the metroplex?

They are moving in slowly up that way. HEB is a slow moving beast until it really goes after a market and then it explodes. When they moved in to Houston they did a tiptoe with these smaller markets called Pantry Foods. After they built about 60 of them they came in with the real HEB's, but that was just 10 years ago when those started to pop up.

I saw HEB when I was in Houston a few weeks ago - is it a regular grocery store like Kroger/Tom Thumb etc?? What would you compare it to? People seem to LOVE IT. I thought it looked a little strange.. maybe the name just threw me off idk, didn't sound like a grocery store. Had no idea it was part of the Central Market family, and that they sold stuff other than groceries... I want to try it out, I hope it comes to Dallas!

I really wish HEB would come to Dallas. The HEB store brand stuff is amazing. I go to Central Market for the bath tissue, k cups, and almond milk alone.

I love HEB! I travel a lot on business and go to one when I can find it. Their deli items blow the others out of the water.

Take all the best parts of central market like the seafood & meat counters, fresh produce area, bulk grains section, and top gourmet brand items. Then mix in all the regular brands that you would find in a normal grocery store along with high quality HEB branded (their generic) items.
Basically if you took the best of Tom Thumb and Central Market and put it all in one store. You can watch a cooking demo and buy fresh sea bass, prime filets, a 12 pack of coke and craft mac and cheese all in one store.

"News" to add to the fodder. Article from 5/22/14:
"The Supermarket News story notes that Albertsons could sell out once the merger closes, and quotes an anonymous insider who believes “San Antonio-based HEB could be interested in expanding further in the market, and that Cerberus [the firm that owns Albertsons] could be interested in exiting the market once the deal closes.”

We visit my sister in law in Austin often and stop in at HEB before the ride home. They are awesome grocery stores with wonderful quality, selection and prices.
The nearest one to Dallas is in Waxahachie I believe and dont think I hadn't considered making the drive lol
