I see snake bites routinely in the ER... Many get bad and require antivenin. No fun.

When I move into my house, I'm buying a long weapon of sorts.

If you got a Rat snake hanging around your place, chances are you have rodents there as well. Thankfully Rat snakes are relatively harmless but rodents attract venomous snakes as well. So I highly suggest eliminating all pest or possible food sources. I would also keep barn swallows from nesting around your home. We had some barn swallows nesting on our front porch that attracted rattle snakes. You think finding a rat snake under you BBQ pit is fun, wait till you find a rattle snake by the front door.
