I've camped in snow in years past in the Arkansas mountains...Keep an eye on the weather and maybe you'll get lucky.

Ruidoso is Southern New Mexico not northern.

We made it to the Springs from the HEB area of DFW in 10.5 hours- and that was stopping 3 times for snacks/bathroom breaks/gas. Surprisingly easy drive! It snowed when we were up there in mid-November and was so pretty! Lots of potheads, though, loootttssss of potheads.

Hang around, it usually snows once or twice a year in Dallas; every two or three years enough to really look snowy.

It looks like there is currently some snow in Kansas and Missouri right now? That's about a 7-9 hour drive. And while that's too far for a day trip, it might be close enough for a weekend outing. That's definitely closer than northern New Mexico or Colorado.

Still looking? Willing to fly? Salt Lake City has yards of snow in the mountains. You can get a free or $1 ride by bus up Little Cottonwood Canyon and stay at a cheap motel in downtown Sandy. Deluxe version is to go up to Park City and stay at Deer Valley.
Here's the view from Alta:

Looks beautiful! It's not quite a place I could make an easy weekend getaway out of, but I'll add it to the list of places I'd like to visit.
