Yes, we were sold on it before we went through the process of moving. Planned for it for 2 years before.

DH and I decided against a 55'er because we were concerned about 2 things. Number 1 we are on the younger side of the retiree spectrum and were concerned that as tail end baby boomers we would find ourselves among an older demographic. We had both been through the loss of our parents recently and felt it may be too depressing to see people we had become friends with becoming frail and passing away. Our second reason was that as previously stated as baby boomer's albeit on the tail end, perhaps when we would eventually need to sell there would be a multitude of homes available and perhaps we would be stuck with a place that no longer worked for us. So we bought in a non age restricted community.

We think we're on the younger side of the retiree spectrum, too, at ages 73 and 74! We're not retired, but operate our own business. The variety of people we encounter on a daily basis (age-nationality-white collar-blue collar) either while working, playing, or sitting on our front porch, agrees with us. As Elizamary said - It's all about choices. Glad you found your way here, and hope you are enjoying your new home!

That's planning! I figure you'd want to stay there for the long haul? If it's 55+ then that can encompass maybe 30+ years of living in that community.

Of course.....we are glad we did for the having done for us reason.

But if you get really involved be prepared to handle the gossip, know it all's, old news bags who are into everyones business, criticism

The problem is people dont' have enough to do with their time. Not all but a good majority do and even if you are not that kind of person, you do fall into it very easily if you want to fit in.

live and learn. we do love our home and Now Im involved outside the community as well as an occassional activity in the community

all about balance.

Keep busy and you will be happy and stay out of trouble.

My comment is all 55+ communities for this is a know fact from people who live in many 55+ communities through out the country.
Just have to be smart and cautious when you move in.

take it slow and choose wisely.

Get involved outside the community too.
Volunteer is a good way to go.
Living in a 55+ community is like living in any community. There are people you like and get along with, and there are others that do not seem to fit into your ideal of "good neighbor". We've been enjoying life here at Roesville for almost 3 years and have to say that we are glad we moved here. We have helpful neighbors, neighbors who are involved in almost all of our activities, and there are some who keep to themselves. Certainly no complaints from me.

Keep in mind that some day you will be among that "older demographic". Life is like that...and if you're lucky, you will get very old. I prefer living in a neighborhood where people understand and don't refer to me as the "old lady down the street".

Or did you take it all in and then jump into it because you knew it was the right choice for you? You know 55+ looks good. Only thing is and bear with me I just think it's like 'communism'....;-)...Yeah I'm off the board on that, eh? Maybe I exaggerate but you see when many have to input into decisions I kind of wonder about all that. You see sometimes I think when it's say 'everybody's park' then it's nobody's park....;-)...
"Communism"? Seriously? I don't think you understand what 55+ is all about.

Default Hello everyone in Delaware!

Hello everyone in Delaware!
I have not been to this thread for a while, and hope everyone is well.
After traveling all over for last few years, and a ton of research-especially in this forum, we finally decided to move to Summerville, SC 55+ community. Our house is under contract, and we are buying home down there closing in the end of August.
I just want to say thank you so much to everyone in Delaware and in this thread for a lot of helpful information and advices. Good luck to everyone who is already there and who is in process of deciding where to retire. Yes, it took time to reach our decision, and everyone is different. We bought in the idea of 55+ because we are finish with watching kids running around the pool, and like to have HOA so we don't have to mow the lawn and worry about our neighbor's overgrown bushes to invade our yard. Many people in 55+ is moving from other area, and we would like to start new friendship-moving on to our next stage of our lives.
Thank you again, and Good luck to everyone! We will keep in touch!

Really? Is that what they call me in our town?

You know I have to admit I'm sort of using the term facetiously in the sense that in a 55+ community some decisions are made by commitee would that be correct? That commitee makes the decisions on various items for the individuals living in that community. On the other hand ,if you live in your home you do what you want to your property, nobody but you makes the decisions. Nobody tells you what you can do. I have the feeling that if I live in a 55+ I would have to respect the 'rules' of the community decision-makers. Now if I don't like it well it wouldn't be for me. Do I have that correct then?
