i like to know how how big is detroit in size! every time i ask someone thery always say it use to be the 4th largest city but people have and what not. but if a city is large its not gonna shrink regardless how many people leave its gonna stay the same size.

is it big as chicago in land size(not population) or smaller

The population is about 890,000. The City used to hold 2 million, and it is still the same size.

If you count the entire metro area, it's huge. Not as big as Chicago, but damned big. I think the area has about 3-4 million people.

The Census Bureau's 2006 estimate placed the population of the Detroit-Warren-Flint CSA (9 Counties) at 5,410,014. This CSA covers 5,814 square miles (15,058.1 km²) in area.

This makes it the 12th largest in the country. When you hear population figures and rankings, typically they are referring to a Census statistical area rather than an individual city.

the population is goin back up, they had made a mistake! it over 900 thousand....its pprolly more than a million because i dont believe they counted the crackheads and alot of southern people have moved up here lately cause of the water problems down south

When they say it's shrinking, they don't mean land. They mean population.

detroit metro area is 6 million area , detroit proper is only 950,000.

Did it actually increase? I thought it was just decreasing slower than they'd thought. 951K in 2000 and 918K today.

so why do they determine a city size based on the pop. of the city and not the land size thats why i was always confuse when people say it was the top 5 largest cities in the states when the population was going down they should at least clarify what they are talking about
