I recently read an article about morning sugar spikes. Now I cannot find it when I want to know more and remember what it said about causes. What causes the early morning sugar spike in particular and what are the symptoms?

Thank you.

One cause is that with no food for the hours between dinner and breakfast, the body compensates resulting in a spike.
Many find that a small snack just before bed prevents this.
Small meaning something like a cracker with peanut butter..

Thank you. I do have a biscotti (no icing in mine) and a cup of chamomile just before bed. Maybe that isn't working.

the diabetic morning sugar spike is called medically dawn phenomenon or somogyi effect. The reason for this is as below:

The too much injection of bed time insulin caused an episode of asymptomatic hypoglycemia (night sweat is a sign) during the night which leads to the increased secretion of counter-regulatory hormones (growth hormone, corticol, etc). These hormones can increase blood sugar level to counter actions of insulin to decrease blood sugar level. When at certain time point during the night the insulin is worn out, the effect of these hormones to increased blood sugar will cause the morning sugar spike.

This could happen when too much insulin is taken earlier before bed time or you don't have enough of bed time snack.

I don't take insulin; so, it must be the snack. Or, perhaps a too-early dinner. Thank you.
