Hello
My sister has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. We live in different states and I want to help her by providing her with information about the disease. She lives in a small town and when they told her that she had it they did not really inform her all she needs to do. She is severely overweight and all they told her was that she needs to lose weight and to eat sugar free items.

Well I went to visit her and she was eating sugar free candy, drinking sugar free soda. However, she also ate pizza (with chicken breast instead of pepperoni), grilled pork chops, preformed boxed hamburgers and she drank mixed drinks. She is under the impression that since she is grilling the pork chops & burgers that they are ok. However, they were shiny with grease.

I would like to get her a subscription of a magazine that is marketed for people with diabetes. I think she really just does not know what she should & should not be eating. She does not have access to the internet and the dr. did no even give her any handouts.

Can anyone recommend a magazine or any other place to get easy to understand info about this disease.

Thanks

I have insulin resistance, and the ADA people told me I could have donuts, just not a whole box. I was shocked. I dont even eat donuts.
They told me its a myth you cant have ice cream. I don't eat ice cream, as I am allergic to dairy.
From what I have read about insulin resistance, refined carbs are not good. Protein...good forms such as naturally raised chicken, organic eggs, fish, tofu, brown rice, oats, lots of vegetables and fruits, are what you're supposed to eat. Instead, they gave me a sample menu and the breakfast was toast and cereal. If I ate like that, I would be starving in a few hours. I do eggs and maybe some guacamole on the side, or oats.

Check out the Physicians for responsible medicine page:
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) - Neal Barnard, M.D., president
Also, you can buy the book "Preventing and reversing diabetes" or see if the library has it.
She will have to make drastic food changes in order for her to get rid of it. And to keep her off medications as well.
One of the doctors on the pcrm website wrote the book.
Also, more info on mcdougall.com.

Drugs will make her Want to eat ...so dont jump her if she does. When I took this 1 pill I thought I was starving to death even after a huge meal. How high is her blood sugar? IF she is borderline then she could by monitoring her blood sugar After she eats. & get off the drugs. Use a Glucose Meter to Create the Perfect Diabetes Diet
oh I am fat with this method I take no drugs...havent lost any weight. But I also haave other medical proplems!

Being a former T2 Diabetic, I know it can be beat. Diet and exercise are critical elements. If overweight, she MUST get that under control. The drugs will help with the glucose numbers until she gets her body to control it naturally. There is strong and growing evidence that this can occur in a very large percentage of cases. Indeed, the PCRM is a very good source of information. In order to beat Diabetes the very first essential is developing the mindset to do it. Then a regular exercise program and a diet stressing veggies and fruit. Initially she has to be wary of the fruit sugars but there are fruits supplement capsules that have the sugar removed so that she can get at least some of the fruit nutrients she needs. In a relatively short time, for me it was 6 mos, she could well get to the point were the drugs are no longer needed, in fact they may become detrimental. The problem then becomes one of maintaining her health by continuing with what was done to reverse it. Diabetes is such a dangerous diease, young and old alike, that is for the most part, unnecessary.

I know a lot of doctors who, right or wrong - consciously or not, blow off severely overweight patients. The medical perspective is that obese people generally make poor patients because they are at serious risk in any surgery, have demonstrated a lack of discipline as stewards of their own bodies and any doctors orders that require lifestyle change or discomfort are not very likely to be followed. Some people have posted good links for information on Type II diabetes but I think that the best thing you can do is help her find an attentive specialist who takes an interest in her case. Easier said than done, but it can be done.

I have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and since I was placed on meds, it is being controlled, my problem is that I have other issues (neuropathy of an undiagnosed type for which I take Lyrica 3 xs daily otherwise I am in terrible pain in my feet, also cymbalta for nerve pain and metformin for diabetes, since diagnosed, I have an incredible need for candy. I have a "hidden" stash of probably ten pounds of chocolate candy at all times and eat most of it in a week. I did not have this prior to the meds and have gained about fifteen pounds, but I am not overweight. I am almost 60, 5 foot 3 inches and carry my weight between 120 and 140. Is there a safe supplement that I can take to controll my cravings for sugar? Thanks.

In a nutshell...
Type 2 is usually not insulin dependent
The cause is usually due to obesity
The body has enough insulin but its the receptors that are not working
Usually treated with oral meds
Exersize and diet are very important
Must always provide foot care and check for cuts (AVOID INFECTION)
