For Cod sakes, get one! If you don't have any health coverage, get thee to a free clinic or apply for Medicaid!

Meanwhile, start reading your food labels and setting your eating straight. You need low fat foods -- 2-3g/serving of fat in anything is plenty -- and fiber, fiber, fiber. The grains you eat should be whole and unprocessed, like rolled oats and brown rice instead of quick oats or Minute Rice. Don't eat more than about a cup at each meal, or more than 2 slices of bread. Most of your protein should come from beans instead of meat -- MUCH easier on the system. If you're still hungry, eat something even higher in fiber like raw beets or sliced celery.

Meanwhile, start walking and doing yoga to get that blood sugar down. Weight lifting also helps because muscle burns a lot more calories than fat.

That should help.

Wouldn't believe this I have good health insurance but cann't seem to find a doctor that wants to take on all my medical problems. I've been to a doctor today and they will be getting back with me on a appointment next week which I hate to wait.

Thanks, John

John,

Here is my advice to go along with this last post:

Get yourself an Internal Medicine doctor. He will do an extensive eval at your first appointment and you will talk to him about your DMII and whatever else may ail you.

Now. Most Internists can handle diabetes, or they will at least try to. From there, if he thinks your situation is more than he can take on, he will refer you to a specialist.

An Endocrinologist. It may take a while to get in with this dr as Endo drs seem to be few and far between therefor having such full schedules.

None the less, you will get your ticket in to initial health care and go from there.

You having good insurance is all the more reason to get in there and do your thing.

I have different ailments and no insurance presently, so there is not a whole lot I can do, but given you diagnosis as well as your current issues with it, I say get your butt in there MR!

Family Nurse Practitioner?

I do not know her credentials but if you do not mind dming me her name and town located I will look into her specialties.

A lot of times, NPs have a certain area they enjoy or have more expertise in. The last place I worked at, both NPs that were there specialized in DM, the one who was there before the one there now has actually opened her own office.

She was able to do this under the backing of another physician in town.

I think that at times, NPs are much more thorogh and prsonal with their patients.

Again, you can talk to her about your dx and if she deals with it as a whole, she will be able to help you.

But, just like with a dr, if your case is more complex and he/she has exhausted all avenues, or as many as he may feel comfortable with, you will be referred to endocrinology.

I would say, John, that given that your blood gas was so elevated and even with it having been normal in the two hundreds, you should get in there very soon.

Diabetes is an illness that can stem many other things. How often are you testing your BS? Are you recording it?

I think a good thing, if you are not, would be to begin so that whoever you see will get an idea of what you averaging out. To go along with this, I would also encourage you to record what you are eating.

A great program I have come across for this is FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal

I use it to basically count my calories and eat healthy but you can use it for weight loss, eating healthy, and just recording what you eat.

It will tell you how many sugars are in each thing you eat, and you can get an estimate of how many sugars you are taking in per day, carbs, fats, etc.

I think it is a good idea because you could look back at what you ate and say wow, that had a lot of fat. Or man, look at all those sugars. I need to not eat that or at least cut back or find a replacement.

And they are right, we love having you around as our local news man! I remember when you took that hiatus, I missed you!

Shoot me a line if you need to. I will help you in any way that I can, if it is in my knowledge.

(((JOHN)))
