Personally speaking, I find it easy enough to avoid HFCS and most other unwanted additives in my foods, thanks to food labeling. Also, it seems these days more and more people are wanting and demanding more "natural" alternatives, so I feel the tide is turning at least somewhat in that direction.

As for the natural chicken and beef (or other meats) that is a bit harder, not all of us have easy access to local farmers and butchers who can sell you natural cuts "just like that." But there are at least a few grocery stores (like Whole Foods) where you can buy it (but at a price). Natural foods always tasted better, I buy fresh organic eggs at my local farmstand and there is a world of difference between them and what you buy at the big supermarkets.

I agree that many European countries are a LOT stricter about their foods than we are here. For instance, I have read that GMO's are banned in some countries (like Germany). I shop at ALDI (German owned) and I know if I buy food items imported from Germany, they will be GMO-free.

HFC seems to be in everything. It's even an ingredient in Clausen pickles.

But, its other types of sweetner in other countries. In Europe I think the HFC is syrup made from sugar beets (they have more sugar beets than US-style corn) used as a sweetner.

HFCS means High Fructose Corn Syrup. Corn syrup is never made from beets.

Granulated crystal sugar, and confectioner's sugar comes from beets, and it comes from sugar cane.

Simple syrup is cane sugar dissolved in boiled water and allowed to cool.

Fructose is sugar from fruit.

Lactose is sugar from dairy.

Corn syrup contains both fructose and glucose, whether "high fructose" or not.
