Nobody knew what vitamins were in those days. The people just didn't care.
BTW: I am Irish so I'm allowed to insult the Irish.
My husband is Irish... and American Indian.

This is just a thinly veiled calorie reduction program. Potatoes are nutrient rich and relatively low calorie (depending on what you mix with it) and very filling.
I often eat a baked potato with either mustard or a low-calorie marinade mashed into it (no salt though. Sometimes I scoop some salsa into it as well.
I don't know why some people insist on a "special" diet to lose weight. A normal diet in a smaller amount than you normally eat would do the trick. Just count your calories.
It's all about calories, and you do have to count them. It's not hard to do.
I am not so sure how healthy the potato diet would be, where will you get your protein from? But best wishes on the weight loss.
From the potatoes. They actually have a moderate amount of protein in them, only very slightly below RDI. Of course on a diet you're probably on a caloric deficit so they'd be more below RDI. Also not a complete protein so you'd need to use supplements long-term.
Short term, for weight loss though, sure. The only semi-scientific reason would be satiety index where potatoes are extremely high satiety. As far as all the strange diets you see here, it makes some sense. I wouldn't do it but hey. As far as "filler" calories, I do eat a lot of potatoes rather than rice or pasta. That's just because I like potatoes though.

It's not as simple as "calories in, calories out" or counting calories for everyone. I mean if that works for you, great. But that doesn't work for everyone.
For a two week fast, I guess this sounds OK, albeit boring. Good luck.
I have done a juice only thingie for ten days at a time a couple of times. It's a great way to lose ten or so pounds. But that weight tends to come back within a few weeks. It's a temporary fix.

Actually it is. In order to lose weight your body has to burn more calories than it is consuming. That is a fact. Now what you choose to eat and how your body responds to it is where things vary. You do well limiting carbs, others do well limiting calories. No matter what we eat we still end up at the same place.
A lot of confusion has to do with water weight. You said on another post you ate strawberry shortcake and gained a pound. Unless that dessert was 3500 calories there is no way what you gained was fat. I am sure your body just hung on to the water.

Yep. That's my MO. I don't eat a special diet of any kind. I eat a regular ol' diet just scaled down. Granted, my regular ol' diet now has far healthier choices than before - lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains. And I actually like those things now too.
