our larger dog, a mixed breed seems to have snagged one of his nails. His nails are really BIG too. It's hanging partially on and bleeding a bit. Seems really sore. We bandaged it and had some doggie pain pills on hand from another prior injury he's had. Anyone have ideas about what we can do? Think it will require a vet visit?

Unless the nail falls off by it's self come Monday, yes you'll need to see a vet. Honestly, you also risk infection so I suggest he see his vet regardless.

I wouldn't recommend trying to pull it off for a few reasons; he might be your baby, but if there's already pain you could get bit, plus if it starts to bleed full force you'll be in trouble.

I did find this information out for you on the following website Veterinary Questions and Answers - Torn Toenail First Aid

Default Ouch!

I agree with Cleosmom - just take him to the vet first thing Monday.

It's painful enough for him, you don't want it getting worse and the quick is damaged if you're seeing blood (I assume you don't mean it's torn at the base or there'd be no question if a vet visit is required).

Without being able to see the problem my best advice Get to a Vet ASSAP!
If you just ripped your finger nail off what would you do? How would you feel?

I concur - get him to the vet, as he will probably prescribe a round of antibiotics. Due to location, that area is naturally more open to infection even if bandaged....

Yeah I work at a vet and we see this all of the time.We just take the nail off if its that loose and put some medication on it and bandage it until it heals a bit.You know what works GREAT,honey bandages. Its amazing how the honey heals the worst wounds.
