Any hardware store will have the "Beware of Dog" signs. I put a small 4x8" reflective sign on both of my gates so you have to see it before you enter.
I have two boxers (both female) for pets/protection. My husband travels for work and is gone most of the year so I like the feeling of having them in the house. I also have a pistol on my night stand but that's another story.
Shep is a med large mutt. 60+ lbs. After we got him we thought he was probably a washout as far as security, because he is so darned friendly. When pest control came in, he just ambled up and wagged his tail.
However, recently he will bark when someone simply approaches the house and tries to open the door (like our swim instructor). Or when we're in the backyard, and our neighbor shows up with her kids. I still think he's being friendly. But his bark is VERY loud, and he's very toothy. That kind of dog is what we wanted. Someone that will let us know if there's anyone out there trying to come in.
geneyus...
beware of the dog signs are NOT reccomended...
in some states putting a "BEWARE" sign up indicated the dog is agressive and you KNOW the dog is agressive...
which in some states means if your dog bites someone even on your property you liable because you KNEW the dog was agressive and the local animal control can treat your dog (even if it has no priors) as a Dangerous dog. (which in some areas that means imediate seizure and even euthanasia)

I disagree. The "beware of dog" signs are the standard sign to have on your property. It doesn't necessarily mean your dog is aggressive... it means that everyone should be cautious that there is a dog present. Shouldn't be too hard to argue in court if they came into your backyard unannounced.
We recently had a German Shepherd that shredded a non-resident's arm after they walked into the home unannounced. The dog was quarantined until rabies vaccinations could be proven, and then the dog returned home.
whiloe i agree...
i can tell you in ct a beware of the dog sign means you "know the dog is dangerous"
even if the dog is a mush...the word "beware" is a problem in connecticut...
unfortunatly our neighbor had this problem and lost her dog after the state seized it when it bit a neighborhood teen that trapsed througb their yard. animal control seized the dog stating the owners knew it was 'dangerous" because they had a sign telling poeple to beware. unfortunatly the dog, who was elderly and deaf didnt survive the kenneling and rough handling of animal control, stoped eating for 2 weeks before charges were dropped and the dog returned home, unfortunatly by that point the dogs organs had already started to fail.
their laywer stated that unfortunatly in connecticut at least having a sign that says 'beware" is essentially an "admittal" that you own a "dangerous" dog and animal control do not require a seizure warrent or any real proof after a bite (even if it doesnt break the skin) to seize the dog.
had they had a simple "dog loose in yard" sign, animal control wouldnt have been able to seize the dog without a full court order...
the kid was tresspassing and did damge to the property, (he was 16 so knew better) the dog was deaf, old and had free acess to the fully fenced yard...
the dog should never have been seized but the simple beware of the dog sign sealed his fate.
now i tell people better to be safe than sorry, combine a no tresspassing sign with "dogs loose in yard" or "dogs on duty" or "on patrol" or something, but leave out the "beware" part.
I love my dog too much to risk her being in a confrontation with a human. If I am not home, I would rather get robbed than risk my dog getting hurt, and if I am home, I am far better equipped than her at dealing with a 2-legged threat.
That being said, she can be an intimidating alarm system. Strangers don't have to know that all she wants is a face to lick and a belly rub.
I used to think that she wouldn't hurt a fly, but clearly I was mistaken, as evidenced by the dead fly here.
