I have a toy poodle. I cut her myself. She isn't a show dog or anything, she is a family pet. Sometimes the cuts are gappy and horrible, sometimes they turn out pretty good. It is hair... it grows back. My family has requested that I not cut her head/tail too close because she 'looks like a rat'. Other than that, I pretty much use a straight guard and buzz buzz.
It is funny though. If I lay the towel out on the floor, my doggie runs, jumps on it, wiggles around then rolls over for me to do her belly.... she likes it. Her nails... that is a different story. DH and I have to do them one or two at a time.
wow stan..thats scary, its not like giving a dog a bath is technical...how could the groomers do a crappy job, i agree with you...my guess is theyve got highschool kids doing the baths...
I don't know. Because I mean, she's a fluffy dog. And a good job means washing her so all her hair is clean, her skin is clean, her mats are gone (though I brush her enough that she has no mats), she's brushed out completely, she's soft, and the hair is lying nicely...we've been to various kinds of grooming places, and I don't think they're cheating us with the bath, but the blow-out usually sucks, she's often not soft, often rather damp, often stringy lookin' hair, and there is rampant uneven stuff going on with the sides of her hair (which is naturally even, so wtf?).
So far the vet does the best job...but they are the most expensive and my job does almost as good as theirs.
stan honestly it sounds like there not doing a blow out, sounds like there towl drying, mabe a quick power blast and then crating with the cage dryer...the power blast gets the majority out then the cage dryer does just that, blows through the cage drying that which the air comes into contact with, these dogs usually dont dry throughly and arnt combed as their drying (meaning not as fluffy. and "polished")
ive known a few groomers who do this and it bugs me, its ok on shorter dogs or dogs getting a full clip out ect afterwards, but if your paying for a real blowdry/fluff than you should be getting a blowdry while being combed out.
we used cage dryers all the time at the doggy day care i worked at, i did most of the grooming, and the owners only paid for a bath, we didnt offer anythign like combouts of blowdrys, and it was very typically for them to come out feeling and looking like what you described. i always took a little extra time and about 1/2 way through the dry would take them out and give them a good comb out so at least they didnt look half finnished...
I have 2 rescue collies with long hair and only attempted to groom them myself once. When their hair gets wet, it turns to dreadlocks, they don't like to be brushed, I don't know how to clip and forget the hair dryer. It is much easier for me and them too I think to let the groomer do it.
I previously had a black lab that was much easier, she was wash and wear and I think that is the route I will go when it it time to get another dog.

You have to brush 'em out and strip a little undercoat BEFORE you get them wet.
The mats are really best dealt with before they form...once they are there, it's a nightmare.

Our Collie was a MESS if not brushed every day. Every other day at the very least. We only let the grooming "get away" from us once. Never again. Lots of work keeping a Collie bEautiful.
Bathed my dog & groomed her coat & nails last night. She got a treat afterwards for being so patient. She's usually pretty easy to groom. I just give her breaks so she can get a drink or go outside.
I just finished the last of our dogs. I've got Tzu's and this one wears me out. He runs in circles while I'm trying to follow around the table with the clippers, he acts like he's going to nip me if I get anywhere near his head, I just feel worn out after grooming this guy. I'd rather take him to a groomer but I don't think it would go well. I cut him short and pray he grows slow lol. He's cut now and had his bath

NO Way would I do it.
She's usually pretty easy to groom. I just give her breaks so she can get a drink or go outside.
