Glad your guy is better! This reminds me of how my dog licks at the carpet and the floor for some crazy reason sometimes. He can't stop. He won't stop. Until he eats crab grass. I remember one winter we couldn't find grass for three blocks because the snow was so deep. It was so cold out. I went to the store and bought that live pet grass. I grow it every winter on my windowsill. This doesn't happen often, just once a year. No idea why it happens. All I know is crab grass stops it.
My dog is doing the exact same thing and I took him to the vet yesterday. He indeed had broken a tooth, caused by gum disease. We had a cleaning done about 2 or 3 years ago, he was at the vet not long before this and they always examine his teeth carefully. So this is pretty new, and I'm guessing it started when he broke his tooth. That has resulted in a current sinus infection so the doctor gave him a shot of antibiotics that lasts two weeks.
However, I am not waiting two weeks for dental surgery. The constant licking and laying in our bed all day long is not at all normal for him. Hope his sinus infection caused by his tooth breaking is better by then.
I can't stand the thought of him being in a lot (or any) pain. Dogs can't tell us so I've read they suffer in silence. The look in his eyes, the symptoms his sinus infection has given him and worry about infections that now can get into that area from anything he puts in his mouth is very much worrisome to me.
His surgery is scheduled in 3 days. I feel so very lucky that all the vets at his clinic do dental surgery so I don't have to start all ver.
What I've learned from this is not to wait until the vet thinks he really needs a cleaning. I am taking him every year from now on, although I hate the fact he has to have anesthesia so often.
If your dog has a broken tooth and eventually the symptoms *seem* to go away, it is still so very important to get it removed! I know a few people who have had gum disease, had a pretty simple surgery with no reason not to recover quickly, but died in the hospital by getting an infection through the gums. Because that is most likely how the bacteria that caused his sinus infection came from there, I can't totally keep him away from things that I would assume he could get a horrible infection. He is drawn to eat dog poop, his or another dog's, and dead birds fascinate him. What a horror it would be if he put his mouth on a decomposing bird.
