Actually I read that he is 49 and single. He and his ex girlfriend got the dog together when it was 8 months old and had been abused. After she left him he mourned and was very depressed and the love of his dog brought him back from despair. He got his first computer a few months ago and all this attention is overwhelming. He is a property caretaker somewhere and lives a very simple life. On an interview he was asked to tell what the dog means to him and he couldn't speak and had to turn away with emotion. his heart will surely break in a million pieces when his old buddy dies and I know the media will follow the story.

Here is John and Schoep's FB page. He is giving his dog some great lazer therapy which is making a big difference. Go "like" him and keep up to date of the dog's progress.

I love that picture. And thanks to the other person who posted the story.
People are debating the age of the dog but it really doesn't matter. Sometimes unlikely things happen. I had a Dane who lived to 14, almost twice the usual life span. That lake is Superior, it's also usually much too cold for swimming.
i would like to put that picture on my frig to remind myself that there are lots of wonderful and kind people out there, and many ways to show that kindness.

I had 3 dogs (at the same time) and the cocker lived to be 18 and the 2 afghans lived to be 16 - unheard of per the Vet. It happens. That lake is cold.
My parents had a larger dog, a mutt (around 70 pounds) who lived to 19. I agree though, that the age really is irrelevant to the photo. It's just beautiful.
