I have a 14 mo old male Havi and recently adopted a 6 yr old timid female mill dog same breed who recently had pups (before I got her) At times they play a bit but my young male is possessive of all his toys and chews. Even the ones that are new. I can give them each one of the same thing but if she has it, he wants it. She growls and warns him but he is relentless. If I pay attention to her he immediately goes over to her. He doesn't growl but I still get the feeling it is a possessive of me move. I try givng him more attention but I don't know if that is the way to go. If I tell him "no" he looks confused. Initially when she growled he backed up but he's getting more brazen and insistant that he wants whatever she has. How do I deal with this situation? I don't want either to get hurt.

A good toy to get is a long rope toy or other tug of war toy. Play tug with one dog yourself, then the other dog. Talk in a happy, isn't-this-fun voice. Then give one end to each dog, still happy talking them and encouraging them to play with each other. This worked for my dogs when they were new together, and got along about everything but toys. The always wanting the other's toy thing never completely goes away, but once they learn to have fun playing with toys together, it's not such a problem. Hope this helps!
