I don't think I've ever seen an ugly dog. If they're considered ugly, its usually their teeth.
And to the poster asking about temperament in a breed: Its all generalization. There's good and bad in all breeds, and if you get one that's rated "bad", that doesn't mean yours will be. Look at the bad name Pitts have, but the ones I've met were literally the biggest loving babies I've ever seen.
I love that huge doggy! ^^^^ Caucasian Ovtcharkas are another favorite in the looks and intelligence department. I told my husband I wanted one eventually until I read about the breeding and extensive training that goes with them. These dogs are made to be protectors and need lots of training and space. They are working dogs that will not hesitate to use force to protect their owners and territory.
