I threw about $6K and then some at trying to save my Catahoula. I knew it was probably futile, but until they told me there was no chance, I was going to keep him with me.
I don't know and don't want to know. Over the past 27 years there have been 16 dogs, 5 came to me as puppies, the rest were adopted as seniors. Some have been very expensive, others not much more than the cost of food, supplements, vaccines, etc. Oh, there was the cost of a cross country move to this rural place so that I could keep my promise to buy them a place with a pond or a creek (got both) so that they could run around on 28 acres and swim at home, no more long car drives to the beach or the lake. LOL.
I've been fortunate enough to have enough money to cover emergencies, surgeries, and other costly conditions and would not change a thing. I'd guess that I've completely financed my vets daughters BA and MA at a minimum.
So many GREAT dogs, thousands and thousands of hours of wonderful companionship, laughter and inevitably some tears but I know that I got the better end of the deal. It's been a privilege and a pleasure to have each and every one of them in my life. Not just the ones who where mine but also the numerous fosters who spent a little or a long time with me before finding that wonderful forever home.
Aside from annual checkups and vaccinations, my dog (Rudy) has only needed two emergency visits in 12 years - first one cost about $850 when he ate something poisonous (still don't know what exactly), then another maybe $400 for a bad stomach virus. Also spent about $350 recently for minor surgery, to remove a non-cancerous lump on his foot.
He's a hearty medium-sized mutt, so I guess that helps!
