Really varies by year and by the dog. Most years, a hundred for general checkup and vaccinations. Due to AK location no need for tick, flea, or mosquito preventatives. But then there was The Year of the Dog when my cattledog cost about $10,000 all unrelated injuries. This also includes airfare to ship her to the vet each time:
kicked by a moose that tried to go through the dog yard fence. Split lower jaw, 6 broken teeth.
slipped and fell on ice, dislocated hip/torn ligament.
ate something (rotted salmon?) resulting in massive infection/pancreatitis, spent a week in ICU.
attacked by the neighborhood vicious stray lab; stitches.
dove for a tennis ball, planted her nose on the road, broke 2 teeth.
In general my dogs don't cost a lot unless something happens. I don't believe in over-vetting my dogs (and they have all lived to very old ages so far *knock on wood*). But I feel like some vet clinics get you in the doors and then guilt you to run a ton of tests and sometimes unneeded procedures.
I have had 6 dogs over the years (not counting foster dogs) and each of them have had at least one expensive vet bill over $1000
what is the time frame of the $15,000? Is that in a year or 5 yrs?
I suppose we are dog nuts. In thinking we have actually spent more than I thought after thinking it over.
I think part of the trouble was our dogs were Bradycephalic and very high maintenance,
$20,000 over a 15 yeard period.
We always joked we were off to the pediatrician,whom we got to know on a very personal basis over the years.
I suppose we are lucky we could afford the expense.
Just adopted another dog but this breed is a very healthy breed,so fingers crossed.

Crazy I know but dogs surgeries are very very expensive.
Many years ago I deliberately chose healthier than the average breeds. So costs have been low. My border collie that past a couple of years ago lived to be 16, and I probably spent $3k over her lifetime for all of her health related costs. Nearly a third of it came from a 4 day long stay at the vet for injecting most of a blanket, and she got her teeth cleaned twice, which took sedation.
Hard to tell after almost 50 years of pets: 14 cats, 8 dogs, 4 guinea pigs, and 2 rabbits. I’m sure it exceeded $20,000. I think the initial costs by themselves exceeded $4000.

Yes, I'm sure it varies with certain breeds. Cattledogs are known for being stoic, brave, and tough as nails. Unfortunately that bravery can get them in over their heads! When something does happen to them if its anything other than a severed artery they don't bother telling you. You find out later, usually after the vet's office closes. When the moose kicked my dog (at night of course so I didn't see the whole event) she trotted back in the house as if nothing had happened, ate her dinner with normal gusto, curled up on the couch as usual. It wasn't until I saw the pooling blood on the couch under her chin that I realized something was wrong. Rolled her lip back and saw broken teeth, blood, cut gums, just a huge mess. Couldn't fly her to the vet until the next day. She never let on...not a whimper, whine, nothing.
