My dog is part lab and I SWEAR she understands. When you say words like car or park or cat she knows what I am saying and ***** her head like she is listening.
As for breeds, you're bound to get some 'less intelligent' ones. I know some people who swear by poodles and insisted on that breed but one of them was not too bright...(lovable but not 'smart' in the poodle sense.)

Absolutely. My lab goes to the car if I say car.
Her driving is terrible, I have to say, but we're working on it.
There's many words she knows and has learnt to act upon, as do many other labs I'm sure.
A favourite with kids is to ask her to 'shake' whereupon she puts out her paw to shake hands.
You do need to do the Spelling, and not the words!
LOL. With my Golden, we don't say "walk" anymore. We used to spell it but that was a hassle. Now we just say "w".....as in "who is going to take Macie on a 'w' this afternoon?".....we proabably need to start saying CR instead of "car ride" too!
I would second and third what others have said regarding the fact that labs will eat most anything. I just finished reading Tell Me Where it Hurts by Dr. Trout, DVM. When he writes about various things dogs have ingested and he's had to surgically remove I'm amazed. He has a lab and he thinks that a labs philosophy can be summed up by this statement: "It was there so I ate it."
I would highly recommend a book by Suzanne Clothier - Bones Would Rain from the Sky. It's about deepening our relationships with dogs.

Got a lab/sharpei mix on Saturday morning. The sharpei in him gives him a pretty unique look and personality and he's a handful but coming along nicely. And the comment on the sidesaddle thing, yeah mine does that too, lol.
Looks like the reason he was dropped off was medical expenses. He needed entropic eye surgery in both eyes and wasn't neutered. The rescue group got all that work done though so he is ready to live a happy life. I must say he isn't too thrilled right now though, lol. All but the stitches under one eye are out and those come out next week. You can still see the saved spots on his front legs and around his eyes from the surgery.
A shame he lost his family because of that though as he was pretty well taken care of. He already seems to have some basics down though he isn't very well socialized. All of that will be taken care of with training and a lot of TLC. It is good to go out and take a mile or two walk with him though. He loves it and I get some exercise. Still got to work on those leash skills though.
Harper... funny thing is someone at the local pound uses themes when taking in the strays we think. The rescue group I worked with had a handful of dogs all rescued around the same time and they all had names from the show Lost. I don't watch Lost so never would've noticed but someone at one of the adoption events noticed it and mentioned it.
