Godspeed Jake. Run fast and free with your healed body.
We all have been paying extra and loving attention to Jazzmine right now. I know that she is missing Jake just as much as we all here. I have been talking to Jazzmine about what happened to Jake. She does understands me. She has been really loving on me at night when it is bedtime. If i get up to go to the bathroom during the night she has been following me everywhere in the house.

Do you think I did the right thing by taking Jake's food bowl away from where they both ate at? Or was it to soon to do that to jazzmine?

I'm so sorry for your loss...it's so hard losing our beloved pets. May Jake rest in peace now.

As to your question about removing his food bowl...of course it's your choice. We lost one of our sweet boys in March and I left his crate up and his dog bed and blanket in it's usual place for a few months. I have four other dogs and I think they found comfort in his things. I'd find one or the other of them laying in Sammy's bed or crate. I know "his smell" or essence was of comfort to them...and me.

Do whatever makes you feel better. There's nothing wrong with reminders and remembering. Sure, their physical presence is gone but memories and reminders are with us always.

What a sad time this is for you dachshundloverof2. We all share the love for our beloved pets and we all feel for you at this time of loss (hugs)

We can never keep them with us on this earth long enough, but we can always cherish our good and heartfelt memories of them.

Thank you everybody for all your sympathy about losing Jake. Please let me know if you think it is way to soon to be looking for another male dachshund right now?

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Just found out today that my baby Cotton has CHF. He is almost 10 yrs. He was born in my house so it is everything a mom would feel for a child. Maybe sounds odd but that's how I feel about him and I just can not imagine life without him. He also has a brother, born the following year, also born in my house. They have been inseparable. I am devasted and don't know how to help Higgins in the end.

I am sorry to hear about Cotton! How advanced is his CHF? My dog Bob had it. His first symptom was panting more. After our regular vet made the diagnosis, we took him to a veterinary cardiologist, who prescribed medications that kept Bob going for another 18 months. The cardiologist was surprised he hung on that long, but I suspect Bob kept going because his buddy boy dog friend was there to nudge him when he needed it.

It's a lot to absorb when your dog gets a diagnosis like CHF. My advice would be to focus on making Cotton's quality of life as high as possible, take it day-to-day, and see how he does with treatment. Higgins will probably figure out something is wrong with Cotton, but will also probably treat Cotton normally, which is what dog buddies do for each other.

Keep posting. I am sure others will be along to offer insight and advice.

Thank you all so much for sharing your stories ... My 11 yr old chiwahua has been diagnosed with Chf recently ... He is coughing about 10 times a day ... We go for regular X-rays and a few cardiograms but the cardio specialist say medicine cannot help him at this time ... But it's difficult for me because I see all these dogs on it with the same thing ... He also is finding it so hard to sleep and get comfy, I feel so badly for him, I think he is so tired ... My heart breaks that he is uncomfortable but atl acts like his puppy self when not trying to sleep ... He coughs less in a cold room so I keep it colder than warmer trying to find the perfect temp in our NY winters ... I will take him back next week for another X-ray and pray his heart is still a mild-moderate size ... I really only have 2 questions ... ARE ALL YOUR ANIMALS WHO ARE ON MEDICATION ALREADY IN HEART FAILURE ? HOW LONG CAN THEY LIVE AFTER GOING INTO HEART FAILURE ? Ugh I am so very sad there is no cure, I would give every dollar to make him better

My papillion Lilly (13 yrs old) has CHF. She is currently on 4 different medications. She is happy, playful, eating just fine and appears well....except....her cough is horrible. She has coughing and gagging episodes constantly. (every hour) When we walk...she doesn't cough. When she lays around...she coughs more. My neighbor hears her coughing spells while I am at work and has called me several times with concern. He feels she is suffocating. Her heart is enlarged and pressing against her trachea. (saw for myself on the xray) It's very difficult when she is still eating, happy, playful to think about ending her life. Is she suffering and suffocating? Can anyone offer advise?

I posted the following on another thread about CHF but thought it might help others here:

I adopted my sweet doberman Queenie in July 2010. At the time I didnt plan on loving her so much. She was then 9 years old and I figured I'd give her a good home for a few years until she passed on. But, somewhere along the way, she wrapped her paws around my heart and I fell so in love with her that I begged her never to die. Although I've had dobermans for 45+ years, she was the sweetest/gentlest and truly the love of my life and I often regretted that we found each other so late in her lifetime.

She was diagnosed with CHF in April 2013 during her regular semi-annual exam. She had shown no symptoms at all but was put on Vetmedin, Enalapril, Lasix and two other meds specifically for CHF. Despite several vets' predictions, she lived a great life, except for getting progressively more tired -- but, of course, she was getting much older too, so it was difficult to know how much of the tired was due to CHF and how much was due to old age. Then, on Christmas Day 2015, she started having multiple syncope -- fainting episodes due to her heart not being able to pump enough blood to her brain. She had 5 of them in less than 2 hours. So, with a grieving heart, I took her to the emergency clinic and let her go.

I know I should be grateful that she lived 2.5 years after her diagnosis and that she felt so good -- no coughing, no fluid retention, no fluid in her lungs, no symptoms at all -- until her last day. I've lost many dobermans over the years but it never gets any easier. In fact, my heart and my soul are more broken now than ever before. And I'm so lost without her.

I have a beautiful rescue dog, Amber,. She is 9 yrs old with an enlarged heart and is on lasix and enalapril. She coughs constantly and I've noticed she isn't as perky as usual unless my boyfriend is talking to her. She is very skitish and doesn't let us hold her so the loving has to be by tone and petting. It makes me sad not to be able to hold and comfort her and you know at night she is a little uneasy once we go to bed. The coughing has intensified and we are unsure what her quality of life is. Making the decision to let nature take its course is what we are planning but not sure what to look for to know if she is hurting.
