How many people are making MW in this "family"? Just one? The way things stand now, you get a lot of public benefits if you have dependents. At any rate on the BI of $8k I proposed, a couple and a kid would be getting $24k/yr with no one working. If one has a MW job it's up to $39k.

A person getting $8k/yr can live just fine. They won't be in their own nice personal apartment in a fashionable city, though. If you are so annoying that no one can stand to live with you, then you may have trouble.

You mean they won't be where they can easily get a job.

You seriously think that as soon as a woman has a baby she's going to get an extra $8000 a year? Whoa, Nellie! And you thought women on welfare were keen to pop out babies for the extra money. Wait till this hits the streets!

But it still doesn't change what I've said. FOr the first couple of years that $39,000/yr will keep this family happy and healthy. But then prices will go up...and up....and up...until $39,000 isn't going to be close to what people need to live on. You forget, or never knew, that minimum wage used to be able to support a family, buy a house, and send a kid to college. Now look at it. Now we call people who make minimum wage losers and they can't afford to rent an apartment anywhere in the US. How far we've come.

I made minimum wage in the mid 70s and was well able to afford a 1 bedroom apartment with no roommates. Since then, rents have gone up 6 to 8 times more than minimum wage has gone up.

But maybe instead of fantasizing about this extra money everyone's going to get, we should wait and see if it's even feasible, let alone going to happen. And as we will have to agree to disagree, apparently on everything, I'm out of this conversation.

Correlation and causation aren't the same thing. In 1957 a doctor made 10 dollars an hour.

Yes, that is the premise of a basic income. Every person gets a check, every person.

Basic income is only ok if you make people do something to earn it. No sitting on your a** and expecting a handout please.

It'll be a handout

And hopefully it'll be spent hence creating a stable inflation.

If people NEED a basic income just to survive then there should not be a lot of spending going on. More like saving and investing only.
