Terrorism in the U.S. (CBS News) WASHINGTON - U.S. military and intelligence forces have been tracking Anwar al-Awlaki for years. On Friday, they found him and killed him.

Awlaki, who apparently inspired the Fort Hood major who killed 13 service members and whose ties to al Qaeda may go back as far as the 9/11 hijackers, was tracked down leaving a funeral in Yemen and killed by a rocket fired from a U.S. drone aircraft.

Who was Anwar al-Awlaki?
CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports the hunt for Awlaki was code-named "Objective Troy" and had been in high gear for months.

A CIA drone finally got him, but that was only the tip of a much larger military operation. Missiles fired by the drone took out Awlaki's vehicle. That made the American-born cleric the first U.S citizen to be targeted and killed as a terrorist.

A senior defense official said, "a very bad man just had a very bad day."

President Obama seemed to have no qualms about Awlaki's American roots. "Awlaki was the leader of external operations for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," Mr. Obama said after Friday's attack. "In that role, he took the lead in planning and directing efforts to murder innocent Americans."

here is another version of what happened:
The confirmation sparked immediate concern because despite repeatedly railing at Awlaki for his anti-US sermons and implying he had some sort of tie with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) he was not charged with any crimes at all, let alone a capital offense. (not to mention the fact that others were also killed too)

i don't remember obama being appointed supreme commander of the world.

i know obama isn't big on following the law-but we have a system of laws in place in this country-for immigration, for declaring wars, and even for killing US citizens.

If an American is aiding and living with US enemies...he is an anti-American...and our devout enemy! Seems a very good call to stop this guy. Did you approve of Dubya Bush pre-empting a bloodbath on Iraq ....with no just cause? Bush should have done same to Bin Laden...but Bush only cared about getting his personal enemy, Saddam. And Bush is responsibile for much killing...of Iraqi citizens...as well as our own American soldiers!!!!!!!

DAmn this is painful, but I have to agree with him on this issue. We have a system of laws that we all obey. While this jerk was a terrorist, he was also a US citizen and as such had the protections of the constitution. He was denied due process. In the future does this give the president the authority to execute anyone "He" deems an enemy to the state without due process? This is a very slippery slope.

Yes, everyone posting here with bad words against Obama, is a terrorist of the State.

Even all Tea Partiers are terrorist.

See where this can lead.......

The power changes and all the sudden, someone declares all Progressives terrorist of the State and calls for their elimination through assassination???? Weren't the Jewish in Germany, enemies of the Nazi State?
