Non-Christians generally vote overwhelmingly Democratic. Not Just Jews, but also Atheists and other non-Christians all vote in or close to the 70-80% range for Democrats generally. If I had to guess it is because so many Republicans insist on advertising the fact that they want to make America an explicitly Christian nation and put Christianity in the government and the classroom. I imagine that doesn't fly with the overwhelming majority Non-Christians. BTW I am one of those other-non Christians and I am pretty sure I will never vote for a Republican save if I am personal friends with them.

I think this is really the crux of the issue, as most of my Jewish friends & family members would agree! Especially given what I read on this forum, it seems many Republicans wish we were a theocracy - a Christian theocracy, which would kinda defeat the purpose of us (non-Christians) coming here in the first place. Didn't my people flee Eastern Europe for religious freedom? So how on earth could I justify voting for that party, when they'd love nothing more than to see us become a Christian nation? It certainly isn't the only reason I won't vote Rep, but it does play a big role in my leanings.

I really do agree. Deep down that is something that really worries me because if we get away from the government being a neutral arbiter on religion then we Non-Christians risk being tolerated only at the whim of the religious powers that be.
How is voting for Democrats "giving back"? The programs they have promoted,at least since the Great Society, have mostly been massive failures. I actually think it has less to do with "giving back"than being liberal on social issues. Social issues for non-religious Jews trumps everything else it seems.
As for the Irish, when I was starting to follow politics in the 70s and 80s still seemed to in Chicago be mostly Democrat. Italian-Americans,who at least in Chicago, were never really much into politics, many,if not most were voting Republican and continue to do so. You can't say the Irish came up harder than italians.
I think it has to do with the demographics. The Irish and Jews settled in urban areas of the North. They had little, and both groups learned that higher education was a great equalizer. You will see both groups overrepresented in academia, for instance. And the migration across the northern urban corridor, from NY/Boston to Chicago and San Francisco is where they tended to move. All are Democratic bastions. The Irish love to argue (and to be pissed off to a certain degree-it is all about the battles), so the less educated ones sometimes fall into the talk radio culture of ranting and perpetual braindead outrage, but generally those that are urban and college educated lean Democrat. Jews have all these habits, but perhaps less of a love of fighting, and even a more intellectual/academic bent. I don't see many Jewish folks listening to Limbaugh, but I could be wrong.
I don't know much about the Italians, except they seem to produce great chefs and rock guitarists. Hot women too. Gwen Stefani is a goddess!

I am half Italian, as far as Italians voting it is not a monolithic block like it was in the 1940s, but by far most of my relatives on that side vote Democratic, it's not even close. There is a reason that all the states that are plurality Italian (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island) are still heavily democratic. It is not as though Italians on mass are signing up for the GOP.
