Kasich is the GOPs least offensive candidate. Unfortunately the GOP has dug themselves to a point where that doesn't work for their constituents anymore.
Heck, the Republicans could run Mitt Romney again, or, if they were smart, Paul Ryan or perhaps Rand Paul or Lindsey Graham, even though both of the latter bombed in the Republican Presidential primary.
My expectation is that when the dust settles, it either will be Kasich or Ryan. Most likely the latter as he's one of the Koch brother's boys, even though it's possible that the Republican base will abandon Ryan in the general election.
Anybody that doesn't believe Kasich is an offensive candidate isn't familiar with Kasich policies in Ohio. Unlike Trump, he actually has a policy track record, even though to date he has managed to disassociate himself from it.
I'll bet the Cruz camp is debating whether to go after Kasich given some of his policies. E.g., the Libertarians and Tea Party in Ohio detest Kasich. The Tea Party opposed the Kasich JobsOhio program which diverted billions of dollars of state tax revenue into a secretive fund controlled by Kasich lackeys. Kasich also championed Republican law changes to keep a Libertarian candidate off the last Ohio gubernatorial ballot. See post 1 here:
As someone said, Electoral College is designed precisely to hinder a third party's ability to win the Presidency.
In 1992, Ross Perot spent nearly $100M (in today's dollars) to launch his independent Presidential run. His campaign was the strongest independent challenge since 1912. He got almost 20,000,000 votes and received about 19% of the popular vote, pulling votes from both Democrats and Republicans.
Do you know how many electoral votes he got? Zero. Zilch. Nada.
Mr. Trump won't do much better than Perot in a 3-way race. He is no dummy. He knows that he can't win against Hillary and GOP establishment candidate . . . . and he knows that if the House selects the President, they will select an establishment guy. The whole point, however, of mounting an expensive third party run is to spite the GOP establishment . . . . if he cannot achieve that objective, why would he do it? Again, he is no dummy.
Mick
Much different situation this time. If Trump is on the ballot in the southeast, do you think the GOP would risk trying to beat him there when they might split the Republican vote and hand a state like Georgia to Hillary? They'd get out of Trumps way and try to keep everyone under 270.

The assumption here is that the Republicans will hang onto to the House this year, and elect a President if there is no majority in the electoral college.
It's possible that the Republicans loose the House, despite their disgusting gerrymandering in states such as Ohio.
It's more likely that an independent run by Trump guarantees even a Hillary victory in states such as Ohio.
Hal: Oh, aye, so can I or any man, but will they coom when you call them?
Spoiler
Owen is a poll-watcher. Hal is anyone who's got the wit to remember how often pollsters change their tunes. Who can call a race? Will Shakespeare. Or any man.
The only people who can call a race happening tomorrow are ones selling something for today.
If Kasich is so electable than how come he cannot win in the primaries? Even states with open primaries he is losing?? Makes no sense.
You ask a good question but understand this... the GOP Establishment doesn't really care about that. All they want is an Establishment Hack At Any Cost. If they have to completely undermine the Republican base to get that done they'll do it. These people are not our friends.
Here's the sad truth...Kasich may be a worthy candidate with real political experience. Out of all the 17 original Republican candidates, I like him the most after Trump. But the sad reality is that if the RNC pulls some sneaky tactics to deny Trump the nomination, I will not vote for Kasich, or anyone else for that matter. I will only vote for Trump, even if I have to do a write-in. The Republicans may be successful in making Kasich (or some other candidate) their nominee, but if it is not Trump, whoever they pick is doomed.
I am now of the belief that Mr. John Kasich, the governor from Ohio, will be our next President. Here's how it happens:
1. Trump falls short of 1,267 delegates
2. Trump threatens to run as an Independent if he's not chosen by the GOP, but the GOP says go ahead and do that, and they nominate Kasich
3. Trump runs as an Independent
4. Hillary wins a plurality in the electoral college, but fails to get to 270. Kasich wins Ohio and maybe 1-3 other states. The GOP keeps him off the ballot in many states, letting Trump win.
5. The election goes to the newly elected Congress and they vote for Kasich
Our newly elected President is sworn in with something like 25% of the popular vote.
What are you smoking, or ingesting?
Bob.
