How historic is the midterm Senate pickup of +3?
Historic, but not the record.

The last President to pick up more than 3 Senate seats was JFK. He picked up 4 in 1962. Nixon picked up a couple. And then everyone else lost seats until George Bush in 2002, and he picked up 1. All other Presidents lost Senate seats during their midterms.

The House is a different deal and we don't know the final tally yet. We can see that the World Champion of Losing Seats is Obama at -63 in 2010. Looks like Trump will lose about 35 or so.

See for yourself.

What is historic is the number of women and minorities who won congressional seats or governorship....an Hispanic, a Muslim, a gay man. This is what will go down in history books. This election has changed our country

Does it count if they are Republican? Marsha Blackburn for example is a woman who won.

There are upwards of 600,000 votes left in Arizona, so could still be +2. It is a decent pickup for the GOP in the Senate, but this cycle was very difficult for the Democrats because of the seats that were up (2020 is going to be a tough cycle in the Senate for the GOP for a similar reason)

Newp. The country is changing, alright - it always has - but this election was not historic for the reasons you give.
Gay legislators have been around a long time. Before Barney Frank there was President James Buchanan (He never came out). Hispanics have long held office, so have Muslims, native Americans, many women. I can't imagine why you think this congress will be noted for diversity in the history books.

Yes, it absolutely counts! I’m proud of every single one of them.

Did they all win in one election like they did in this election. No, that’s why it’s historic.

You are forgetting about Florida too. Republicans flipped Indiana, North Dakota, and Missouri senate seats. Florida has been called by some, but its looking like a recount. Arizona is still too close to call.

Florida is likely going to a recount mandated by state law, but I was including it. Remember they lost Nevada, so it is either a net of 2 or 3 depending on what happens in Arizona.

I'm thrilled with the new female Korean immigrant Congresswoman from California.
