12 democrats and 21 republicans up for election next year. For the same reason the republicans gained seats in the senate last year, the democrats have a good chance of gaining seats in the senate next year.

As mentioned, Republican Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas has announced he will not seek re-election. Roberts is currently in his 4th term in the Senate and prior to that served 8 terms in the House. At the end of this term, Roberts will have served 40 years in Washington (16 in the House, 24 in the Senate). Democrats have made some strides in the state of late, picking up the Governorship, a House seat and some state legislative seats. With that said, the state is still solidly Republican and as long as the Republicans can avoid nominating Kobach (or someone similar) they should be a heavy favorite to hold the seat.

Currently there are two Senators not seeking re-election to their Senate seats, both are Republican.

Republicans not Seeking Re-election to the Senate

1. KS- Pat Roberts- Retiring
Trump 56.2-35.7, Romney 59.6-38.0

2. TN- Lamar Alexander- Retiring
Trump 60.7-34.7, Romney 59.4-39.0

Currently, there are two members of the House who have announced they will not seek re-election, both are Republican.

**1. NC-03 Walter B Jones Jr- Retiring
Trump 60.5-36.9, Romney 58.4-40.6

2. UT-01 Rob Bishop-Retiring
Trump 49.7-22.4, Romney 77.4-20.4

** North Carolina's maps are due to be redrawn prior to the 2020 election following the districts being thrown out by the court.

Cory Gartner (R-CO) is gone. CO went blue for the state government in 2018. Under almost no circumstance do I see Gartner being reelected.

No, there just isnt a map that is "good" for Democrats in my opinion.

Both parties pretty much hold the seats that we think lean one way or the other.

Colorado being the only Republican held seat that is considered a "blue" state.

We will have our First Special Election of the cycle (NC-9 appears to have been headed that way, but no confirmation yet) as Pennsylvania Republican of the 12th district has announced he will be resigning from Congress effective January 23rd to take a job in the Private sector. Marino just won his 5th term to Congress and was nominated by Trump in 2017 to become the nation's Drug Czar, but withdrew after his efforts to weaken DEA rules regarding Opiods came to light.

The 12th district covers mostly rural areas in north central and portions of northeast Pennsylvania and is heavily Republican. This was formerly known as the 10th prior to redistricting last year. Redistricting did add State College to the district (which is Democratic), but did so while also adding some heavily Republican areas in northcentral PA, and losing some marginal to swing areas in northeast PA. All in all about 67% of the district remained the same and it didn't really change much politically as Trump won the old 10th by 36.0, and the new 12th by 36.4.

The date for the Special Election in PA-12 has been announced, it will be held on May 21st. There will be no separate Primary for this race, both candidates will be selected by their respective parties.

The NC-9 situation remains up in the air.

Congressman Rob Woodall of Georgia's 7th district has announced he will not seek re-election. The 7th is a district in suburban Atlanta that was traditionally very Republican, but has trended strongly Democratic. Trump did win it by 6 points in 2016, but that margin was well down from Romney's 22 point victory in 2012. This was also one of the closest races in 2018 with Woodall winning re-election by 419 votes out of the 280,000 cast. This is a district that the Democrats were planning on heavily targeting prior to Woodall deciding not to run for re-election and this will make it even a heavier target

Republican Congressman Walter B Jones of NC-3 has passed away. Jones previously announced he was not going to seek re-election. His death moves the seat from an open race in November 2020 to a Special Election. No timetable has been set for the Special. North Carolina is likely facing a re-draw of districts prior to the 2020 Election, though it appears this Special Election would be under the current lines.

Currently there are two Senators not seeking re-election to their Senate seats, both are Republican.

The North Carolina Board of Elections has called for a Special Election for NC-9. This comes after allegations of voter fraud and testimony on it regarding Absentee ballot collection by a GOP operative. Mark Harris knocked off Incumbent Republican Rob Pittenger in a Primary last year and had a 905 lead over Democrat Dan McCready in the General Election, but when evidence of the fraud emerged the NC BOE declined to certify a winner and eventually called for a New Election following a hearing in whichHarris himself called for a new election

The date for the Special Election held in NC-3 has been set for September 10th. Primary for April 30th and Runoff if required for July 9th. If no Runoff is required the General will be moved up to July 9th. (30% is required to avoid a runoff) The Special Election schedule for NC-9 has not been set yet, but might follow the same dates

Republican Congressman Bradley Byrne of AL-01 has announced he will not run for re-election to the House and instead run for Senate against Doug Jones. AL-01 is a solidly Republican district that covers most of the SW portion of the state including Mobile.
