I believe that overall, racism against black people in this country dwindles with each generation. This could be the first election where enough old racists have died off that we elect a black (or at least bi-racial) president.
Amen! And the YOUNG shall lead us out of this wilderness of hate.
You're not alone. I've got family and friends like that.
I've severed relations with a sister who insists Obama is a socialist, doesn't support the troops, and all the rest of it. I called her on it, and that was it, I'm now as low as $hit to her. At this point, I consider it no loss.
I've got another family member, a BIL, who is always whining about how they give the N's this and they give the N's that, yadda yadda. So, who's the first guy in line for a handout; who's the first guy to sit on his ass and watch the Speed channel until his eyes melt; who's the first guy to work "off the books" so he can get around certain Social Security rules; who's the first guy to sit on his ass and let his wife support him; yeah, "that one" my BIL.
I've got pals who send those crap emails around, to a long list of pals in our railroad hobby. We used to hit the delete key, but in the last few weeks we've started refuting the lies and telling these guys to knock it off.
On the bright side, one of my great grandfathers lived in Richmond, VA. When the Civil War started he walked away from his wife and 8 kids, made his way to Washington, DC, and joined the Union Army. THAT is one relative I'm proud of.
Those emails have largely stopped now. Tomorrow we'll put the nails in that coffin and pi$$ off a lot of racists. Good.
Yeah, I certainly hope so. I ignored a lot of the e-mails over the summer, but recently had to make my opinion known. What gets me is that a couple anti-Obama people who sent these stupid e-mails to me just figured I believed the same as them. OK, I'm a gay white man, my partner of 13 years is black, and we have bi-racial children. Why would anyone assume I'd be voting for McCain
[quote=Diane Giam;5980737] His name is not American, so of course some people will associate with with 9/11.
And do you think that is RIGHT that some people associate his name with 9/11? It is IGNORANCE. Plain ignorance. And THAT is why Republicans often get the rap of being 'stupid rednecks.' not saying it's true, just saying that it's one of the stereotypes.
Some of us lost friends it it. My husband lost 300 coworkers. We only moved to TN a little over 2 years ago.He was supposed to be in the Trade Center for a meeting that day, someone else went instead. They didn't return.
Yeah, I lost people in it too. we as a nation need to stop invoking 9/11 for political purposes. it is disgusting and shameful. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OBAMA OR THIS ELECTION. the idea that either one of them is going to keep us "safe" is an illusion. If someone REALLY is set on attacking on American soil, they will find a way to do it. That is the reality.
His views are socialist. Other countries want him to win because they know we will be weaker.
That is one of the more stupid statements i've heard on here. And that's saying a lot. First of all, his views are no more socialist than most politicians. McCain ALSO supported the the big "socialist" bailout!
As for other countries wishing us ill, If the US does well, other countries do well. AND VICE VERSA - have you paid attention at ALL to what the current crisis has done to other countries? It's called global interdependence.
I bet the Kool Aid wore off on your wifes family. You really are not nice knocking them like you did.
not nice? lol. the OP has a right to his opinions. and they just happened to be based in REALITY unlike a lot of the repubs on here.
Want to provide some valid stats on your assertion?
I actually agree with that guy. I'd assume that there is a greater percentage of Republicans with college degrees, because Republicans usually have more money and can give their children better "opportunities". However, the misconception is that "College" makes you smarter. I've seen some complete idiots make it through college. College just requires TIME and EFFORT...it doesn't require intelligence. I've learned more out of high school than I ever learned in it.
Well let's just say that on the next (if we ever) visit, I WON'T be paying his green fees!
Actually the best part is that while I couldn't talk my wife into sending an extra $1,000 to the Senatorial candidate who is running against the dirtbag R in the home state of this relative, she did agree to send them $500!
Then I went off to spend an hour or two canvassing at the local Campaign For Change. Instead of doing one canvass package, I did FIVE OF THEM.
So while these idiots sit in their house and worry about the ******* taking everything from them, I'm working to make my country a better place.
So, if you're the kind that couldn't let that kind of talk die out with your grandparents, or in our cases with our parents, just remember that not every "average white guy" or gal that you meet on the street wants to hear you flapping your gums.
I have a couple of relatives like that. Despite me telling them that I don't agree with their opinions, they continued to send me religious and political e-mails. I simply put them on my blocked senders list. Problem solved!
