He made a detour into professional boxing in the 1990s.
For the record, I'm asking about actors and actresses who made bad career choices, not those who self-destructed due to personal problems such as substance abuse.
The problem w/ that is it often goes hand in hand. It's the old "what comes first, the chicken or the egg" argument. Do some of these people fail first, often causing them to turn to substances....or does the substance problem cause their failure. There could probably be some pretty convincing arguments for all scenarios.
I'd agree with Nicholas Cage. He had some great movies early on but it seems over the last few years, every role he takes is the same and he plays the characters the same way.
Jim Carrey needs to take time away from movie for a while. He tried to get away from the spastic comedy he started his career with but people didn't buy him in those (though for the record I think The Truman Show is an amazing move). He needs to take a few years, sit back, and then get into the more serious stuff, kind of like Bill Murray did.
What about Billy Crystal? I know he just had a movie come out but I can't remember the last movie he had before that one. Same with Martin Short. When is the last time you saw him in a movie?
Back in the early 90s Anna Chlumsky was the next big thing in My Girl and My Girl 2. Then I think she did some movie called Golddiggers with Christina Ricci, another 90s child star that has fallen away somewhere. Someone mentioned Thora Birch which I would agree with. I was in love with her! Speaking of Thora Birch and Christina Ricci, they were in Now and Then with Gaby Hoffman, who was also in Field of Dreams, Uncle Buck, and Volcano and then disappeared.
Freddie Prinze, Jr was in several movies and then Scooby Doo hit and nobody cared anymore.
All this and yet David Spade is still allowed to make movies and tv shows. Just sad.
He had an amazing run in the 1990s. However, in 2003 he did that first Pirates movie, and, to me, his career has, at the least, 'flattened' out.
He no longer seems to go for roles that pushes any edge, but keeps returning to Pirate-themed movies (I see that a fifth one is due 2015), or otherwise roles in which he plays an 'oddball' vampire (Dark Shadows) and other cartoony characters (Alice in Wonderland, Rango (voice only), etc). I see that he shall play an oddball 'Tonto' soon in the Lone Ranger: sure to be another mess.
I agree that Lindsay Lohan wins this one, especially since she had talent.
How about Hayden Christensen? After the Star Wars prequels, he was in one or two movies and fell off the face of the earth.
hayden was in a few straight to DVD films. Was never a great actor, Though "Vanishing on 7th street" was pretty good it was a flop as well. He has had no public controversies though at least.
Edward Furlong blew it as well. Man's a train wreck.
