Oregon is very different than Texas. We love it, but some people have a really hard time acclimating. The first year you will feel like you're on an extended holiday, and everything will be new and interesting and exciting, so give yourself two or three years to really know whether you like it here or not.

The cost of living is different, the taxes are different, the lifestyle is different, the way people do business is different, the dress code is different, the food is different, the scenery is different, the weather is different, the people are different, the way people drive is different, the proximity of things is way different, it's just all-around NOT Texas. Which, personally I and my husband LOVE but some people come here and find they simply can't stand it and leave after a few winters.

Anyway - good luck getting people to tell you good swimming holes/water recreation spots. You'll notice that transplants will often share with you but natives hold their favorites spots close to their heart and protect them because they fear that if too many "outsiders" learn about them they'll become overcrowded and ruined forever. We've learned a few good spots and I used to share them but lately I've been tight-lipped for the same reason.

You might like reading some of the local papers/media sites:

And this show has lots of interesting stories about Oregon, we try and watch it every week: Oregon Field Guide — This Week's Episode · Oregon Public Broadcasting It's similar to the show we used to watch in Texas called Texas Country Reporter.
Thanks, yes I am looking for something very different from Texas, I am sick of the heat and I loved the weather when I went up there in January. I know all the local secrets of The Hill Country in Texas but thats only cause I grew up there. it shouldn't take me long to find them out in Oregon since I will be exploring every chance I get, I am a photographer, and I love the fog and the change in scenery.

Thanks for the tips

Oh and by the way - you're not allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon. Which I think is cool, but some people come here and are surprised by it and it for whatever reason seems to tick them off. ??

Yeah, I like that, and also like the fact that if I can't get a decent job right away I can be a gas pumper. Funny, my first time at an Oregon gas station I pumped my own gas and wondered why I saw other people just sitting in their car, I soon realized and didn't pump my own gas at the next station

& thanks for that website link

Yep... and now we're so used to NOT pumping our gas after having lived in Oregon that when we're driving in other states we sit there waiting for somebody to come do it for us! It's happened more than once, actually. lol

I too lived in Seattle and wonder how different you find it from Eugene ~~ also if you could be more specific about each of the differences you mention (great points!) it would be very helpful. I'm miserable in Florida now so I guess Texas isn't all that different (sprawl, heat, mentality) and Eugene seems like such a great place from what I've read so far.

Are jobs really that hard to find?

That first paragraph is a quote from a previous post, for some reason it didn't come out shaded or in " ".

To your question about the jobs, I feel that it is going to be somewhat tough to find a job anywhere right now.

Are you thinking about moving back to the NorthWest?

I am starting my road trip up there in 8 days!! So excited to beat the heat

Speaking as a native, I absolutely hate it here, because:
-A majority of people here are passive-aggressive and stuck-up.
-There's almost nothing to do.
-Our restaurants are horribly mediocre.
-A disproportionate amount of sketchy/criminal/addict types (who are thankfully pretty easy to avoid).
-The job market is awful. There are almost no good jobs here, and wages are lowballed to ridiculous extents.
-The University of Oregon, its student body and the horrible "Ducks" sports mania.
