It seems like the further east you go, the worse it gets.

But, from what I've heard, the sheer amount of alcohol consumed in Europe is much more than the US and it is much more institutionalized into daily life than it is here. Why?

Europe is white. Whites drink. Middle Easterners smoke hookah. Caribbeans smoke marijuana. Etc.

Every region has their own stress reliever IE Americans addiction to prescription drugs

It may be a stereotype that the further east in Europe, the more people drink!

Some of the top drinkers in the world are (in descending order):

Czechs
Germans
Romanians
Poles
Venezuelans
British
Spanish
Russians
US Americans

Beer? Who cares about beer consumption? As far as distilled spirits go, I'd say some of the top consumers are Russia, Scotland, Finland, Iceland. Possibly Norway & Sweden, not sure. Has something to do with living in the north, they say.

Culture, fun, relaxing, I love it. Many people there can manage to have a drink without the purpose of getting very drunk (though not short on that either). My experience in the US it seems many have the purpose of drinking to get drunk, casual social drinkers are rarer, though there are areas of concentration with these types in the US, like in NYC, DC, and Miami for example. I think overall, casual social drinking is becoming more common, I do see a difference between now and 20 years ago, craft beers and wine sales also have increased a lot; maybe a correlation.

Craft beer lovers are a lot like wine lovers IMOFO. They care more about the taste and quality of the beer, rather then the alcohol content.

There is actually less alcohol consumption per capita in Norway than in the US. Most of Europe is quite different, though.

Nah, it's a cultural thing. The top 6 countries drinking distilled spirits are:

Estonia
Russia
Bosnia
Latvia
Slovakia
Ukraine

Drinking beer in frozen climates isn't practical. I've had HOT BEER.....beer nearly boiling with added fruits and syrup for flavor. So it's almost like tea with a buzz.
