It depends on what you call south. Marseille is poor, but the region PACA (Nice, Aix en Provence) is one of the richest of France, with the region Rhône-Alpes (Lyon, Grenoble...).

It also depends on what you call north, Strasbourg area is pretty wealthy, and Nantes seems to be doing quite well too.

Northern Italy is prosperous, but is not unusually rich compared to industrialized areas in Northern Europe. If anything, it's notably less prosperous than equivalents to the north (compare Milan and Turin to say, Munich and Stuttgart).

So I would say no. Northern Italy isn't unusually wealthy for western European standards, though it is the wealthiest part of Italy. It isn't as rich as Northern European areas, but is much richer than areas to the south.

And North/South differences in France are nothing like in Italy. France has wealth and poverty mixed in throughout the country, and the North is not notably richer than the South (excepting Paris area).

That link doesn't show Northern Italy as one of the richest areas. It shows it as having the same broad income band as most of the countries to the north.

Or maybe we just have different definitions as "one of the richest". To me, that means that few areas match its wealth. In reality, Northern Italy's wealth is somewhat lower than that of regions to the north.

The population in the the inner city of Marseille is poor but the city and its suburbs are pretty prosperous economically. It is just that unlike other large French cities poor are more concentrated in the city center (3rd arrondissement of Marseille has one of the highest poverty rate in French and lower median income).
But economically, is in part with cities in Northern Italy.
Marseille is not like Naples, Naples has one of lowest GDP per capita in western Europe.
