I am current running 2-3 times a week for 1.5-2 miles when i run and on days I don't run I am starting to lift weights. I am hoping by lifting weights to tone up my muscles.
I am not a vegetarian and I do eat meats such as poultry and sometimes red meats. I also eat fruts and I try to get my veggies in.
Anyways I know hard core body builders usually take supplements like those protein shakes and such. My question is when would be the appropriate time to use them, and are they needed?
In general, the time for supplements doesn't really matter. Just remember they are SUPPLEMENTS, not meals. If there are better times for certain things, it will say so on the bottle.
I would recommend not taking either supplements or protein shakes at all in your situation. You sound like you have a healthy, balanced diet and that is enough.
but obviously not as crucial as when you are weight lifting.
If the OP weight lifting program is at a similar level to his running, I would say supplements and protein shakes would be a total waste of money and also totally unnecessary.
Deez Nuttz: I hate to break it to ya (and maybe you already know); but you aren't exactly logging huge running milage and so taking the supplements/protein shakes would be overkill for your level of training. This is not to say that your workout program isn't good, or you need to be doing more, etc. I'm just saying that all that supplements/protein shake stuff isn't necessary if you have a balanced and healthy diet.
I can't comment on your weight-lifting, but as I said if its at a similar level to your running, I'm confident you can skip the supplements for that activity as well.
I hate to tell you, but you don't have a clue what you're talking about.
I'm not talking about anything....you are the one telling this person to hit the supplements and protein shakes for 6 miles of running a week and some light weight work.
Can you provide some evidence that supplements are effective for this person following this particular workout regime?
Heck, you haven't even really mentioned WHAT supplements you recommend! What, ALL of them are good for you? Jeez....
Its almost as if you sell supplements or something....
