But what do you need them for? I'm genuinely trying to understand this phenomenon.
Scarves (of whatever type) serve as a clothing accessory that provides warmth and ornamentation (to varying degrees, respectively, depending on the specific type) and may also have additional uses such as (mainly for women) securing one's hair. An additional use is stuffing them into the mouths of people who keep asking the same question again and again and again despite its having been answered in seventeen different ways.
Except that you can actually WEAR the sweater if you get chilly (many restaurants, etc., run the a/c too high for comfort), which is the purpose behind that trend. Whereas, in contrast...

I think it is a great idea ,
Ever sit at theater or a game and the seat is plastic or worse hard and the back is hard .
It would be nice to have something that you could put between you and or the seat or seat back to be more comfortable.
Just , me practical thinking .
I remember when it was more common for Europeans to wear scarves simply as a fashion statement, and no one else was wearing them. That was true for a long time. Why and how it became popular worldwide, I can't guess. I don't mind them though. Infinity "loop" scarves have had more staying power than I thought they'd have.
Gigantic, oversize heavy scarves were a bit of a thing last Winter. I wonder if they'll be around this Winter too? The stores all seem to be selling them... Zara, H&M, Forever21, Aritzia (Canadian stores), etc.....

A huge scarf has so many uses, just like a shoulder bag. Men need to get into these inventions as more than a fashion statement, they're seriously useful.
I don't see how they don't. They look like an exaggerated version of a cowl neck sweater without the sweater part i.e. the garment version of a wreath.
How is it any different then any other scarf wrapped around your neck?!
