Ohh!! I love a man in a kilt!
I grew up in a big city..and it seems like most everywhere, the police departments as well as the fire departments have their pipe brigades. They always marched during the parades, especially the American Royal Parade in November. I always looked forward to seeing the pipe brigades as well as all of the beautiful horses.
I own a kilt, but haven't had the nerve to wear it in public yet. I got it at the Michigan Irish Music Festival, a huge affair that encourages Celtic pride of any kind and in recent years has added Scottish Highland Games to the festivities.
My husband is Scottish. When we were married, I had a bag piper play as a surprise as we made our exit from the ceremony. My husband actually saw him walking up to the venue and remarked that he wished that he would play at our wedding.
We went on a cruise in August and then attended a family wedding in FL a few days later. My husband decided to wear a kilt for both formal night on the cruise and to the wedding (it was his cousin and god daughter that was getting married). On the cruise, women were either asking him to take a picture with them or men were laughing at his "skirt".
I think a kilt on a man is totally hot--they look so manly even if they do look like a skirt. I'm not Scottish that I know of.
Funny story--was in Paris in the fall of '07 and hanging around were about 10,000 Scotsmen, all in kilts. They were there for the World Cup I believe and they had shopping carts full of ale and Scotch and they were getting riotously drunk--under the Eiffel Tower. Yes I did find out what they don't wear under those kilts!
I think kilts are cool, but I am Scottish, so I may be biased...
Good only in Scotland, or while taking part in some unique, specific, Scottish type event only, or where its part of a "uniform". Not for regular wear here in America.
My brother in law wore one to his wedding. It looked just fine when he was standing up.
If you're going to wear a kilt and you're unused to sitting in a skirt, please don't sit on an elevated stage in front of your wedding guests. We don't need to know that you're going authentic under the kilt.
