I had one aunt who was slim (and fashionable and was never seen without full makeup and dyed her hair) and is still slim in her 90s, but she basically starved herself her entire life. I'm talking about women from past generations who continue to basically eat what they want, as they did when they were young and naturally slim, yet gain weight with age, which is probably also natural without caloric restrictions.

Dimpled, rippling thighs; no one's mentioned that one yet! So you wear longer shorts (Bermudas, Capris) or let it all hang out. I'll be the saggy old lady on the beach in her bikini. Hide your eyes!

Yesterday I put on makeup in good natural light and I swear I must have gotten a zillion new wrinkles in the last week. I'm 48, but solidly perimenopausal (maybe going past peri now). Crow's feet - fine, no problem. Lower face stuff - I will be getting a facelift at some point and I have zero shame about it

No fillers for me though, I don't like the look, and I'm fine with getting thin lips if that happens.

I do miss my 20s metabolism, that was great.

I am 72 and learning so much about skincare, hair care everyday, let's think positive:

1. For hair loss, follow what the Asian Indians do - crush fresh ginger and rub the juice all over your scalp, if it gets warm it means the follicles are jumping into life! Keep doing it every other day.
I spoil my hair using pro-naturals argan oil as a leave in treatment after every shampoo and use the hair mask once a week.
2. I use aloe vera gel on my neck and the backs of my hands followed by vit E oil. I can still see some wrinkles on the hands but hey I use them a lot so what do you expect. On the plus side my neck is reasonably smooth and definitely no turkey neck.
3. I use Monsia Skincare for the rest of my face - you choose a product line that suits you best.
4. ALWAYS protect your skin from the sun wear sunscreen containing zinc oxide.
5. Sunken cheeks - could it be because of the loss of some back teeth? Get some new ones installed if it worries you.
6. I dislike having to wear glasses so I am seriously thinking about Lasik eye surgery.
7. Holly-Kay try rubbing castor oil on eyebrows & eyelashes - my Indian pals swear by it & some of my friends here in UK do as well. I have been using Vit E oil, perhaps not as fast but it seems to be slowly increasing my eyelashes. (I use a cottonwool bud with a couple of drops of vit E oil on & swoosh it along my eyelashes and eyebrows)
8. My hubby & I have been drinking artemisia annua tea everynight before bed. He used to suffer dreadfully whenever there was a change in the weather - no more and it has helped us to get good sleep patterns, bed by 11 and not stirring till 6.30-7.00! We grow the plant & harvest annually and freeze in small packets for use through the year. I drink it alongside my daily intake of 1 Artemisinin tablet & 1 iron tablet to keep away the recurrence of cancer.

Now forget about getting old and just enjoy yourself.

[quote=otterhere;45080641]Why? As NATURE would have had it, you would both slow down at the same time and just cuddle from there on out, which sounds pretty good to me right about now. But with the advent of Viagra, men will be seeking out more nubile women. Not a good thing, IMHO...

Ah no we haven't slowed down at the same time. Mommy wants it every couple of days. Daddy only once a week.

You don't know my John dear one. He would never stray. Besides I'd use it all up before he had a chance to.

I had to cut him some slack this last week because he was working hard in the heat on a project. I had to wait and spend a lot of time riding my bike. Even lonely guy on the corner who is almost 80 and brags about how he's still very much alive in certain places started to look good.

I don't see myself slowing down any time soon. I've always been high octane in that respect, and if lonely guy on the corner is still active at almost 80.........

YMMV... And good for you! But a diminished sex drive is more the rule than the exception in women after menopause. It's nature's way!

Keeping weight off is so difficult for most people because the body naturally wants to eat just a little more than the amount needed to just maintain. Gaining mere ounces month after month will add up to being overweight eventually.

I've been able to stay within 10 pounds of my ideal weight for about 20 years. Once I filled out my frame in my early 30s, I was 6'1" and 190 lbs. Over the years I did things like strength training, jogging, hiking, and bicycling.

Today my weight stays between 195-200. Once I see it creep up to 200, I start cutting out the empty calories. I've learned to live with hunger for more hours of the day. Instead of eating a junk food snack at the first hunger pangs, I try to see how long it takes to REALLY get hungry, then I have a serving of fruit, mixed nuts, cheese, yogurt or other more nutritious options.

It's not easy for the average person to put up with being hungry, but I feel it's good both physically and spiritually to reduce caloric intake as much as possible without becoming emaciated. Ask yourself when was the last time you were truly hungry?
Nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels !

The more realistic concern is how health issues will affect your ability to earn a living, take care of yourself, do the things you like to do.
Back pain means I can't move without extreme pain for a couple hours about half the mornings I awake. I have to be careful about reaching and lifting or will trigger a sciatic nerve pinch, leaving me crying curled up in a ball on the floor for days. Arthritis in my left hand means its difficult to work on cars or do handyman work.
Etc etc etc.
By the time those beauty issues become real you probably wont care about them.
Not even true for disabled old men. Allegedly, John McCain is very bothered by his hair loss. People are not wired to be highly logical.

You're a man, right? Much easier for a man to keep weight off.

But I agree with the poster who said health and functionality trumps looks as we age.
