How did you determine that the shoes were "worn out"?? Holes in them or tears in them? What?
News flash my friend. When shoes are worn out they stop supporting your feet, legs, and back forcing your body to take up the slack. Had pain in those places in the last few years??
Yep, it's worn out shoes that are NOT helping you anymore.
I look at the tread wear on the bottom of my shoes. They're starting to wear down. I haven't replaced them at.
What a bunch of silliness. I wear the same pair of shoes every day until they wear-out. Then I buy a new pair.
Agreed! I wore the same $250 MBT shoes to my standing/walking job for 9 years---no problems. Then after I retired, they broke. Got my money's worth....

I'm 69 and retired and basically that is what I do. The same pair everyday, unless I head out to do some hiking in the woods/mountains at which time I switch to a pair of boots that I wear everyday till I return. Been doing it for more years than I want to remember. And I walk my dogs every AM at a minimum of 4 miles, usually around 6 miles and then another few in the evening. And if I am camping or up hiking in the mountains, I can put upwards of 8-10 miles on those boots.
What works for you works for you, what works for others works for others. You are far from the judge and jury or even a sneaker expert.
If there was any irrefutable proof switching shoes everyday was good for your feet or shoes, then why not switch them every six hours; four hours, hourly, etc.?
As for your back pain, maybe it is caused due to you being old, or for other reasons? Some of us older retired people do NOT have back pain. Might be genetics, might be we were in better condition, might be we were a heck of a lot more active in our younger years, etc. Might be it has or had NOTHING to do with how many times we changed our shoes.

I can't speak for Dirt Grinder as to age, but I am 75 and agree with him/her. I wear one pair of Red Wing boots every day, every where. The only time I "rotated" my footwear was in Navy Bootcamp. We were issued two pair of boots, and had to paint a white mark on the back of the heel of one pair. We all had to alternate the marked and unmarked boots daily, and we all had to be uniform, marked or unmarked. Woe unto the person who made a mistake!
My grandfather gave me that advice a long time ago. Never wear the same shoes two days in a row. Let them air out.
I do think every pair of shoes only have so many miles. I replace the shoes I wear for work every eight months or so. They might still look great---but they are worn out in the support.

When shoes had leather soles ( really expensive shoes still do) it was common for holes to wear through the bottom. That was when you could re-sole them or pitch them. Today 99.9% of shoe soles are some type of rubber or other synthetic. So sole wear no longer is a way to decide it your shoes are worn out unless they are really trashed.

Your grandfather was right!! Best to always have two pair of work shoes and swap them each day. Not only will your shoes last longer (much ,much longer) you body will enjoy good support all day.
Remember.....never wear the same work shoes two days in a row.
I change my shoes several times a day in the summer...flat sandals, high heel sandals, walking sandals, trainers. But, in winter, it's maybe two pairs of good leather boots and some snow boots.
I don't plan it that way, but they do last a lot longer.
Except for my favorite pair of sandals, which I wear all year round...and they are a disaster when you look at the wear spots on the footbed...but I love them! HA!
Wow! I am guilty of this. So easy to have that go to shoe and slip on and off each day. And I have over 100 pairs of shoes!
