I can put my hair in a bun or updo in about 30 seconds. Twirl it, twist it, put it up, pin it, and out the door I go.
Naturally more intricate styling is going to take more time
Yep. As long as your hair is long enough, a bun is the quickest styling move ever.
A woman's hairstyle, in and of itself, is likely only going to be noticed if a woman is tall or seated and it is first thing I see. Otherwise it is the whole aesthetic that gets my attention, particularly the way a woman walks. If she is attractive and has a good figure for her body type, wearing the hair up does enable a good look at sensual neck nibbling regions usually covered to various degrees and cranial and facial structure.
I would second the comment about pony tail on top versus back and that it looks better with enough length to have some whip like action when the woman moves. On top gives a woman more flare, while in back gives a more utilitarian connotation look unless well styled like the images below.
I like everything from the librarian look to some retro looks from classic 30s -50s Hollywood (rarely seen today) on an attractive woman who meets my reproductive fitness assessment meter threshold.
The costume dramas with women wearing their hair in braided buns (or whatever they are called), are very nice to help frame certain facial features or accent a woman in an outfit that draws a man's eyes upward. Think Madeleine Carroll in cinema classic Prisoner of Zenda.
I recall one time a woman wore her hair up and she shouldn't have as she had a serpent like shaped head and wearing it up enunciated this feature making her look like an evil caricature seen in movies or cartoons.
A nice tight wrapped hair bun to match those two to three feet lower is very fetching. It makes a pleasant isosceles triangle (from behind) especially when the lower matching buns have a taut swivel pivot motion with gluteal torsion like a perfect timepiece when they walk. Kinesthetic beauties get me every time.

I was talking to this guy who told me he didn't let his gf's wear their hair up. He told me this on the first date (among much worse things, btw). There was no 2nd date.
I wear my hair how I like. When my hair was long I would wear a high bun and always got compliments. I did need some hair out framing my face, though. I don't like ALL my hair pulled back, but others look great with it all pulled back.
I also wear my hair how I like, up, down, pony, bun, whatever. Been married 17 years and my DH has
never criticized my hairstyles! I personally don’t think most men could careless; however, my DH did tell me once that he didn’t like real short hair on a girl, but I’ve never had hair shorter than my shoulders anyway as I don’t like short hair either.

Yeah...guys complain that their girlfriends and wives take too long getting ready.
Until they start actually hurrying it up...next thing ya know, those same guys are complaining about how their wives "let themselves go" and are ogling at the women who DIDN'T hurry up in getting ready.
The wives notice this and try to put more time and money into their appearance again, and once again, the man starts complaining...
Don't like the look, the only time hairbuns look good is if you're playing a character in a Star Wars movie.
But hey, I'm sure some of you that take offense at this, would also have absolutely zero qualms about mocking and insulting someone that likes to wear cargo shorts, or socks with sandals, or...
Do whatever you want, who cares what others think, amiright?

I LOVE cargo shorts! My last pair wore out. Thanks for reminding me to go look for a new pair.
And I wear socks with sandals to keep my feet warm. I'm sure I have a pair of shoes somewhere but I've no idea where they've got to. Over the winter I was running around in a pair of men's Dearborn slippers with heavy socks because that was what I could find that fit over the heavy socks because these days my feet get too cold in the winter even with socks under my sandals.
So, I'd like to hear from the men here. Do you have any thoughts on this? Do you find hair buns on women particularly unattractive? Now I am curious.
ETA: Buns seem to be a big trend now, and I see a lot of styles that I think are pretty.
I guess it depends upon the bun itself. I think of your basic bun as work wear sincer it functions to get hair out of the way and not show off your generally longer hair as a secondary gender trait. Although a highly stylized fashion bun would get a different reaction when compared to a quick twist work wear ponytail.
