I don't prefer the bun look. If it looks more sophisticated like the below then I totally dig it. Bridesmaid look. I like a nice ponytail too (Ariana Grande), but a simple bun is more unsightly. Especially when the hair length is too short for it too.

As far as the OP's perception, I'm not sure it's accurate. Are these men so superficial that they only "check out" (or open doors for) women wearing their hair in buns as opposed to low ponytails? C'mon.
Next comes...the bun. Women should get that word right out of their lexicons, and that style right out of their fashion palette. I've seen a lot of young women wearing buns--those unmistakable mesh donut things that lend themselves to a very severe style that says old lady and yesterday's librarian. I think they look horrible.
Unstructured "updos" are flirty and playful--they're not "buns." And men generally don't like buns for the same reason they don't like extensions and bullet-proof sprayed hair helmets: they're stiff, structured, and heaven forbid the windows should be down in the car.
