I think that's generally true, but genetics do come quite a bit into play. I inherited my mother's nails. Not a great shape, and very thin. Cannot grow past the fingertips, they start getting thinner and start breaking. My brother on the other hand, inherited my dad's fingernails. Great shape, long nail beds, tough and durable. Both have fingernails that look gorgeous without any effort. Grrrrr.
I wouldn't do fake nails, because I think they damage the existing nail more than they help. But I would recommend getting gel nail polish and redo it when it needs it. Go get manicures. It's fun and they really do make your nails stronger.
And like I said...lotion lotion lotion. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Especially as the weather gets colder. Cold weather and cold hands make your nails really brittle.
I used to pop gelatin capsules when I was in my teens. Seemed to help them grow, but didn't do anything to strengthen them.
Eating jello sounds like much more fun.

Wear a clear polish..nail strengthening while you grow them out.
That's what I heard, too. I've only had on acrylics a few times in my life.
Sounds like nail strengthener is one way to go.
But if I use it, how often do I remove it/re-apply it?

Luckily, I already moisturize quite often. Some days, a few times a day, depending on weather, what I've got my hands into (doing the dishes, food prep, etc.). And when Covid was running wild, during lockdown, I was constantly washing/moisturizing my hands!
I've never been the kind of person to grow her nails. Yes, I confess...I shamefully bit them to the quick for decades.
But over the past few years---at 60-something years old--I've been trying to grow them. Right now, most of them are beyond my skinned fingertips. YAY!
But they seem to split quite often, and before I know it, I'm back to square one. When they grow, they're "flimsy" at best. My thumbnails are the strongest. But even THEY have now split.
I'm not sure what to do to make them stronger, and less likely to split while growing them.
Anyone have any suggestion?
People absolutely adore the supplement route. But here’s the thing. If you already eat a really good diet, and you have bad nails, you just have bad nails. Like me. I genetically have crappy nails.
The one thing I found that really worked well is CND Rescue RXX keratin treatment. It’s an oil that you put on your fingernails twice a day, rub it in really well it really does soak in and doesn’t stay oily. You do want to make sure that you focus it on your cuticles very well because that’s where your nail growth comes from, and make sure you get it underneath your nail because that area gets very dry underneath your fingernail.
It’s it seems to be a product that you’re used for a month until your nails recover. I just use it all the time. My nails are flexible, they don’t seem to split and break as easily, they’re just better looking nails.
By the way if you do dishes by hand and you aren’t wearing gloves, wear gloves. That helps. We also have to always wash our hands thanks to Covid, lotion up afterwards. But literally two times a day morning and night do this RXX application, and it really helps more than anything I’ve ever tried. And I have tried tons of stuff.

I have genetically bad nails too. I'm gonna try that! Thanks for the tip.
