Haven’t read the entire thread so I’m not sure if this topic has been discussed but here goes. The sheer cost of clothing is getting out of control. I went to Nordstrom today to see if I could pick up a new sweater for winter. It’s not uncommon to see some of the nicer sweaters going for $200. Even some of the stuff that was 40% off on sale was overpriced for what you get.

What is also apparent is the fact that there were almost no others in the men’s department buying or even shopping so I think others agree with me. Additionally, I don’t consider myself cheap or frugal. I don’t mind spending money to look good but not at these costs.

I’m sure women face the same problem. But most simply want a nice garment for a fair price. Give me a nice thick well made sweater for $60 and I’m happy. $60 for a nice pair of pants and we have a deal. I bet other men have a maximum that they will pay for a garment and if they don’t get it, they will gladly walk away. But when items now cost 2-3x my ceiling, we have a problem.

Am I the only one?

Nope. You're not the only one.

But I've gotten to where I buy a lot of my clothes online now, and a lot of THOSE come from Temu. I can look nice for a fraction of the cost of buying something at the mall.

But the flip side of that is that companies like Temu and Shein (and even Amazon) have some questionable business practices, and many people don't want to support that just to save money.

I use paypal to purchase, and I go directly to the website (as opposed to the phone app.) I'm not worried.

And I get that Temu, or Shein, or Amazon isn't for everyone...but I sure like having options.

Thanks I’ll check it out. On a side note, I used to complain that seeming 2/3 of people in Seattle walk around in sweat pants and tops. Starting to understand that this is all people can afford! Ok, enough on this rant. Appreciate the tip!

Youre not the only one. I buy mens shirts and cardigans so Im familiar with the pricing. Womens stuff doesnt fit me and its crazy expensive. Even if it wasnt the styles are just no.

Have you looked at vintage. Older stuff is better made. Most is well below $60 unless its some fancy designer or solid *** hair or something like that.

I like my sweaters oversize (xxl) and fall colors but I see lots of nice ones in smaller sizes when Im thrifting.

Ok, I'll add my $.02 For the guys, its neckties with polo shirts, it says, "I don't care & dress codes are stupid." Fortunately, its rarely seen outside grocery stores. Another for the guys is shorts in winter. For the women, it's bare legs under a dress even in winter. No wonder they're cold all the time!

When it comes to clothing, it's actually cheaper to buy the better quality brands - they last a lot longer if taken care of.

The key to getting good quality clothes for cheap? Buy it off season.

I love sweaters, esp thick cable knit warm ones. I'm particular to brands like Nautica, Polo, etc. But at full retail it's $120 and up.

I goto my department stores @ about Feb and Mar. When they are getting desperate to get rid of Winter inventory and getting Spring items onto shelves.

Most retailers DO NOT want to hold onto old season leftovers. They'd rather discount it heavy and get back their costs VS storing it a year.

So oftentimes the discount is 40% and up. I've oftentimes seen additional discounts ontop of already on sale products... stacking it up you get 70% off relatively common at the end of season.

Also thrift and consignment stores. I would rather do that, and buy classics that will last, than to buy disposable Chinese crap from Temu, et al.

Pay less than wholesale on Poshmark -- I bought two pairs of boots and several cashmere sweaters for under $70 -- great bargains daily
