I like Nathan's the best,Hebrew National is my second favorite. My favorite toppings are onions and sauerkraut. I also like coleslaw on mine, is it weired?
The only hot dogs I eat are the red ones (not red hot, just red in color) that we have here in Maine (used to made by Jordan's, but now made by Rice's or Bean's)- natural casing and perfect to me!. Usually in a hot dog bun with a little French's mustard. I can't gag down a Ballpark or similar dog- I immediately sense the very "puffy" texture and it grosses me out.
My dream hot dog ( I know...who dreams about hot dogs?) would have a toasted or warmed bun, be all beef, be grilled, and be topped with mustard, hot sauerkraut, onions, and relish.
The first replie had it right, HEBREW NATIONAL ! You wont find any questionable ingreadients in those dads. I like the Kosher knockwurst Grilled on a webber then wrapped in a warm fresh flour tortilla, no condements needed. Quick and easy for the kids and a no fuss camping item.
And Hebrew National are lower in fat than most of the other brands. I like it sizzled in a pan til browned, then put into a toasted New England style bun with mustard and relish.
I'm not a hot dog eater usually - knowing what goes into them is a pretty good deterent! But I just can't stomach the beef dogs - the consistency is to "mealy" for me. I'll take a smooth Oscar Mayer when I am craving one - yes it happens, on occasion! Prefer pan fried or grilled over boiled in water - I take a lightly grilled bun, place a slice of American cheese, add relish, chopped onions, mustard, and mayo and then place the dog on top of all the condiments. When I bite the dog, the condiments stay put for the most part and don't smear all over my upper lip.
Never, ever put ketchup on a hot dog - that is a culinary crime punishable by 10 months in kitchen purgatory where you must listen to Rachael Ray's shrill laughs and the words "EVOO - that's extra virgin olive oil" over and over again.
Nathan's either grilled black or pan fried in bacon grease.
Toasted bun spread with garlicky olive tapanade from Trader Joe's.
Spicy brown mustard.
Diced raw onions.
