"High fructose corn syrup is attempting to join a long line of corporate name-switchers. The Corn Refiners Association said today (http://www.corn.org/corn-sugar-fda-petition.html - broken link) it has petitioned the FDA to let manufacturers instead use “corn sugar” as an alternative".
I think "Corn Sugar" is a valid term for the stuff, because that's what it is. It is not quite as descriptive as "High Fructose Corn Syrup", I will give you that.
The trouble is, the next step in the hoodwink process will be to collectively designate all sugars as simply "Sugars", which will then be undifferentiated on the label. Which might not be a bad idea. Then "Sugars" would become the first ingredient listed on the label.
Now, we have strawberry jam, which says "Strawberries, corn syrup, sugar, . . ." If all sugars were collectively just listed as sugars, strawberries would fall to second place on the ingredient list. Which would not be a bad idea.
I have one in my cupboard now that lists : "Strawberries, corn syrup, high fuctose corn syrup, sugar,. . ." Which could contain as little as 26% strawberries, even though it is listed first.
Too bad we can't simply go back to using real sugar in stuff..

Very little sugar is imported because of sugar tariffs. If it weren't for that, sugar prices would be lower and you would see a return to real sugar.
