Friday's lunch was homemade stromboli. Except, it was done before our morning break, and we all dug in at 9:00. I work for a school cafeteria, and it was on the lunch menu. Homemade dough made in the bakery department, filled with pepperoni and cheese and ham that I sliced on the slicer. My my job was to finish it up by brushing it with garlic butter and slicing it up for the warming boxes - except a tray of it didn't make it until lunch time! Was it ever delicious!

Homemade dough in a school cafeteria??? I work in one too on LI and none of the pizza doughs are homemade. You have a bakery department? all of the bread we have is ordered and delivered to us (hamburger buns, whole wheat bread and hoagie rolls.) most of the food is frozen and cooked except the grilled cheese, panini's, spaghetti and pizza. They buy the dough and make individual deep dish ones with or without pepperoni. The food in the school I work in is not that good.

Oh, yes, at least in this Pennsylvania school. We have two ladies in the cafeteria who do the baking. They also make the school's hamburger, sandwich and dinner rolls, cookies and brownies. The kids are able to buy large specialty cookies, made to order. I'm one of the assistant cooks. A lot of the food does come frozen (what school doesn't have that these days), but a good deal of it is still school made. I guess we haven't caught up with the 21st century yet.

some stuff is made from scratch, but the cookies, breads are not.I don't cook, I basically serve and wash the pots and pans, I am sub right now and hope to get a full time position.

I started out as a sub (doing serving on the main line, ala carte, and making chicken sandwiches and fries for that area), and of course, washing dishes. No matter what they scheduled me to do, I did it, and didn't complain (even when it meant a week in the Dish Room). Perseverance paid off - after a year there was an opening to replace one of the assistant cooks who left. I had to train for it, though, and I'm still learning. I really love my job.
Gyoza (pot stickers), white rice and a tossed salad with miso dressing.
